So it doesn't have the Anchor Bay VRS, so its intended more for use with HDMI than analog outs.

Under "comparison" Oppo recommends the BDP 83 over the 80 for large image front projection. That tells me the dvd upconversion in the 80 maybe wanting for those of us with 7 foot wide screens. If I go with an Oppo, looks like I'll have to pay more for the 83 to get the Anchor Bay chip. I still have a huge dvd collection that I will not be replacing with blu-rays and I want them to look the best they can be.

I'm curious how its audio DAC capabilities compare to the 83. I will probably be picking one up as an audio player for SCD and DVD-A, and BD/DVD playback is purely secondary. If it has the same analog audio section, I'm there.

Interesting player. I like how it's still a universal disc player, but shifted towards a Digital Transport instead of a beefy all-in-one box like the BDP-83. I could see the 80 as being handy for folks with external scalers or processors, like the HQV Realta in upper-end Denon AVRs or external scalers like the Lumagen Radiance and DVDO VP series.

I guess that, from what I can tell, the BDP-83 is good for those without a satisfactory video processor in their AVR or Processors (or having a standalone Video Processor), while the BDP-80 is good for those with smaller screens or may already have a scaling setup somewhere else. It's still not a "consumer" player though, judging by the near $300 price tag.

              Comparison

Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, OPPO Digital designs and markets high quality digital electronics that deliver style, performance, innovation, and value to A/V enthusiasts and savvy consumers alike. The company's attention to core product performance and strong customer focus distinguishes it from traditional consumer-electronics brands.

The OPPO BDP-80 Blu-ray Disc Player is designed to be a stand-alone universal disc player and a digital audio/video transport. It is based on the same decoder chipset and similarly optimized firmware as our award-winning BDP-83 model. Like the BDP-83, the BDP-80 offers universal playback of Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD and many other disc/media formats. It also features the same fast disc load times and quick response to user operations. The BDP-80's audio handling features are very similar to the BDP-83 with support for internal decoding and bitstream output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

For video output over HDMI, the BDP-83 sports a highly advanced video processor (ABT2010 with VRS by Anchor Bay Technology). In contrast, BDP-80 handles all video processing tasks using its main decoder chip. This chip is powered by custom firmware that was developed from years of experience with reproducing reference video quality and fine tuned picture enhancements. Based on the video processing capabilities, the BDP-83 is recommended for users with very large projection screen or having a large DVD collection that needs the best up-conversion. It is an excellent one-box solution to achieve high quality video. The BDP-80 is incredibly well suited as a digital transport to feed into an external video processor, a high-end A/V receiver or display device with built-in video processing. The BDP-80 is also recommended to be used as a stand-alone Blu-ray/DVD/CD-player that offers higher video and audio quality than many mass-market players.

For analog audio output, the BDP-80 features a configurable 7.1-channel output that can be set as 7.1-channel, 5.1-channel or stereo. The BDP-83 has a dedicated stereo output in addition to the 7.1-channel output. The Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) and analog driving stage in the BDP-80 is a tried-and-true design previously used in our flagship DV-983H up-converting DVD player. Although not as sophisticated as the BDP-83 and BDP-83 Special Edition, this design enables the BDP-80 to be an excellent audio player at a very affordable price. For digital audio output, the BDP-80 and BDP-83 have very similar capabilities and performances, and either can be an excellent audio source for an audio processor or A/V receiver via HDMI and coaxial/optical connections.

In summary, the choice between BDP-80 and BDP-83 depends on the specific needs of the customer. The BDP-83 is recommended where the best possible video and audio performance is required. The BDP-80 excels in a home theater where an accurate digital transport is optimal, and it matches well with other home theater devices that offers quality video processing and audio D/A conversion. The BDP-80 is also recommended for smaller home theaters as a standalone player where universal media support and speedy operations are the most ideal.

Nope. Looks like I'll still end up going with a bdp-83.

                  Oppo BDP-83 with Rotel RSP-1570
                  by watchnerd
I just got the early access version of Oppo's forthcoming Blu Ray player, the BDP-83.

The BDP-83 features VRS video upcoding by Anchor Bay.

What's the best way to configure this with the RSP-1570?

                  Lower Priced Oppo Blu-ray coming
                  by George Bellefontaine
Oppo says it will be introducing a new lower priced blu-ray player in January 2010. Since I have no use for all the extra features of the 83, I will be eager to see what this lower priced unit has to offer. They will have to cut out many features. Just hope they don't take away the Anchor Bay chip....

                  What's with all the re-releases?

Are they giving us anamorphic editions? Special editions with more extras? Just a fruitless attempt to get yet more cash out of us?

I'm curious. Sure, I've seen some rereleases with extras, but I wonder why the sudden what seems to me an...
