My sub blew up :(

I was in my theater room reading a mag when a very loud warble began. Of course imagine my surprise since my system was off (sub in stand by mode). So I got up and unplugged it from the outlet.

When I looked inside, I found a condenser case lying inside. No burns visual to the board or wires.

I think I will try to repair it myself. It is out of warranty. It was such a nice sounding unit that I have to try to fix it.

Maybe the DTS demo of the Haunting was too much for it. Anyway, it's a JBL PSWD-110 that is 18 months old. Maybe it knew I was eyeing that SVS.

Thats a common complaint on the JBL units from what I understand. If its fairly common JBL should be aware of the problem and know of a fix so I'd try calling a local service center first.

This is the second one of these JBL's I've read about blowing up in the last two days!

Sounds like a DC off-set problem. And that will certainly smoke the driver. I'm beginning to wonder if there are some inherent problems with the JBL amps.

You'll need more than just a replacement woofer. The amp itself needs to be "benched" to find out what's happening. Unfortunately that won't be cheap.

From what I have read from multiple owners of this unit whom have had this problem, talking with JBL is a waste of time. It appears that they have just given people the run around as well as their service centers.

It would be a great reason to build a unit! Bad time though. My wife wants to move to a larger house, christmas is around the corner, and I just spent around $1,100.00 this month on various items for my theater including a few DVD's. So, if I can not fix this one by replacing the condenser, there will be no below 80hz pleasure for me until 2001.

I hope that you are wrong and the condenser will fix it. I agree that something made it pop. And of course this is a concern. Also JBL does have a problem with these digital amps. I just hope that if I replace the condenser the woofer is still intact. All it has to do is hold for four months. Right? We'll see!

I know what you mean John, I hit the wall this year on audio video expenses. It was a helluva ride, but it's time to pay the piper. lol. It really hurts too! Actually, my debt is a combination of things. New John Deere, used S10 pickup, DVD players, and such. Hey, come to think of it, it's still a fun ride! :B

Hopefully, once you get in the house, you can think about another sub.

Well I replaced the blown part last night so far so good. It seems almost as good as new. It does not seem to yeild the same output as before but, it is much improved over no output:W. What ever caused it to blow is still there. I'm just hoping it holds thru Xmas!

The only reason I have not condisered a DIY is I would have to buy the saws, workhorse, clamps etc. I thought that if I was going spend on items that I'd may use once every blue moon, I should just get a SVS.

I would love a nice sonosub and some of those niffty DIY mains that are in the Mission Possible site but, I must be real with myself. No 1: I am no carpenter:B 2: I'm no carpenter!(hehe) A man must know his limitations And I know mine!

But, thanks for being there in my time of need. However I think that I will only get to enjoy the pleasures of the DIY projects via my HT Guide Family.
