Hello everyone. I'm new to the HTGuide Forums. My wife and I recently moved in to our new home which we had custom built in Maple Ridge BC (suburb of Vancouver). Two border collies, two cats, no kids yet. In the unfinished basement we had the builder construct a room with no windows and no HVAC ducts below the joists. The room has been pre-wired for our home theater. A couple of weeks ago I began to build the theater. So far I have built the back partition wall with a 36" door to allow for furniture. Today I will be framing for the Middle Atlantic Slim5 54" AV rack I recently purchased to be installed in-wall. Room dimensions are 14' wide by 20' long by 8' high. I plan to drywall the walls, build a stage and riser for seating and install a suspened or drop acoustic tile ceiling.

I look forward to sharing and learning from my and your experiences.

Hmmm... what does a newbie say?

        Hi everyone,

Well, to start, I just found this forum last night while searching receivers on the web. I haven't read many of the threads yet, but what I've seen so far convinced me to sign up pretty quickly. It's obvious that people here are friendly. I can also be found over at www.diyaudio.com sometimes as I have been toying with some audio projects lately.

My other great interest is with human powered vehicles. In fact, there is a leaning tricycle sit in my living room... the frame is cracked and it can't be ridden but I hope to rebuild it when I have more time. In the meantime, I commute to work on my mountain bike.

Speaking of work, I am a product designer but the job is not a glamour position. It does keep me connected to the field and I hope to break out on my own. Since I was young, I've volunteered in PA, student radio, video and 16mm so maybe something with audio is in the cards.

I've noticed a number of people talking about their families. Lucky folks. I can only claim to have been dumped a few times. Yes, it's safe to assume I have very little furniture. Fortunately, every time, I managed to hang on to the electronics. I've listed them below... a total budget system which needs a projector when there is more cash.

        Thanks for the opportunity.

        ensen.

        Toshiba AF42, Sony DVP-NC650V, Teac 2A, Yorkville YSM-1P, Marantz 1530, Tannoy Proto-J, Yamaha NS-W2.

Don't worry about the family stuff. Up until just over 2 years ago I was in the same boat. Now sometimes I wish I could go back! :nonod: :yesnod: :B  Kidding! :nonod: :yesnod:

                Here's mine.

I am 28 and grew up in Johannesburg, SA. Spent a few years in a coastal town called Port Elizabeth. Finished school there. Unfortunately for me there wasn't anyone else with a music hobby in the family, except for the fact that my dad and his brothers entertained themselves when they were little with a guitar on Saturday nights. No TV. :E I work for the largest insurer in SA as a Portfolio Manager.

I am married now for 6 years to my wife Zelda. No kids at the moment, only four cats.

I was always interested in music since I was about 13. I was lucky enough to win a portable CD player when I was 18 which helped me along. My first purchase was a mini system from Kenwood. In 2000 my mother passed away and she left me a few bucks. I then bought my first HT system, after dreaming about it for 2 - 3 years. It consisted of a Yamaha RX-V420 and Jamo speakers. I was quite happy with that purchase. Since I have upgraded to my current RX-V1300 and Boston VR speakers.

My other interests are quite wide. I enjoy fishing, motorbikes, boats, adrenaline sports (Bungee, abseiling, etc.) The nice thing about this country is that we've got everything in one place, nature, game farms, beaches, big cities, etc. A lot of people has referred to this country as a world in one country. 11 National languages. It is still one of the most afordable places in the world. Apparently we have the cheapest Big Mac in the world. This all sounds like marketing... maybe it is. :T I am proud of our little place. I am still looking for a club that is willing to take me for skydiving. The problem is that I am quite big and tall. My big love is the game of Rugby Union. Our national team, Springboks, toured there in the US a few years ago and played against the USA Eagles. I love to go and watch live music. Our South African band, Seether is doing quite well in the US with their album going gold.

I am planning on building a dedicated HT / Stereo room in the next 3 years. I enjoy stereo more than HT.

                Well, that's me.

                  Thanks for the kind welcome.

WAF is a double-edged sword. When you have it, you wish you didn't and when you don't, you wish you did. Go figure. In the meantime, living downtown has it's advantages, and they all seem to visiting from other countries just to sit on a patio and sip latte's.

                  Once again, thanks and regard,

                    Intro

I'm 42, married and living in Georgia. I have wife and a 6 year old clone (son) who provides hours of entertainment. Also have two grown step kids.

I have worked building lasers in Florida, supporting NASA spacecraft in the DC area, and finally developing software out of my home office for a HUGE defense contractor.

I've been telecomutting from my home now for 3 years. There's a room in the basement that I've always envisioned as a great home theatre room. It is big (24' x 13') and has no windows (total light control). So I finally fit the bullet and have begun construction. Opening is due by early October...

                    Components are:
                    Pre: ATI AVP7.1
                    AMP: ATI 3007
                    DVD1: Samsung HD931
                    DVD2 Sony DVP777ES (SACD, DVD)
Spkrs: JAMO D870 (Front Land R)
                    JAMO D8CEN (Center)
                    JAMO D8SUB
JAMO D8SUR (Surround and rear speakers)
                    Proj: InFocus SP 7205
                    Screen: Da-Lite CinemaVision, Cinema Contour 54 x 96

The screen goes up next week!!!

                    Man, I can't wait.

The 7205 is a hot projector for many HT owners, Mark. Here's to many happy hours of viewing.

Well..let me see...I am 53 years old, married twentysomething years,3 children, two at home...I was a firefighter in Boston for 21 years until I injured my knee in 1995.After going to hundreds of fires over the years...I came down some stairs the wrong way at what was basiclly a false alarm. And just like that life as I knew it was over.It was difficult at first missing the guys, the comraderie, the adrenalin rush...the feeling of doing something positive.Shortly after that my we adopted two babies and that took care of my focus and energy. Our oldest daughter was about to enter college at that time and a few years later my joke was that "I'm the only man going to a college graduation and a kindergarden graduation in the same year"for his daughters.Today Anna is 10 and a dancer and diva in training,Xavier is 11,has a great fastball and a nasty natural curve being a lefty and is the point guard on the town basketball team.Jaz is now 28 and is world traveled and has a masters degree .We are very proud of her as she volunteers for many causes and in general is a very kind person.
Mary my better half is a mid-wife and has helped many new souls enter our world.
In 2001 we left Boston and headed to Cape Cod.We found a great house in an amazing location...there are times when I still don't believe I live here. For those that are not familar with Massachusetts the cape is that part that looks like the crooked finger. It is separated from the main body of Mass.by a man made canal and connected by two bridges. It is a beautiful place to live and we enjoy the lifestyle but we are even happier when tourist season is over.Other than it's location the first thing that attracted me to our home was the greatroom and the finished basement now known as Dad's cave.I could not wait to put music and home theater in both.I don't believe the ink was dry before I had my Polks fired up.Needless to say I have upgraded many times since then and am looking forward to the next one.A word of thanks to H.T.Guide and all who post...this is an amazing source of information and inspiration.Anyway...given life's twists and turns...and the things that are currentlly happening in our world... I sit here tonight feeling very fortunate and very thankful...Herm

                              Hi Guys!...great Ideal Lex!

OK, about me, there is a lot to say so I'll sort of give you an executive overview.

I'm 57 almost 58 (hate when I say that!), I'm a PhD in Engineering Management and Marketing, former US Navy test pilot and NASA MS Astronaut (candidate, never flew, my back let me down...lol). I retired from the military briefly after Desert Storm. During the war I served as Naval Air Systems Command Coordinator in the Pentagon military command center (war room) for 12 hours a day.

I retired to South Florida 8 years ago with the intent of kicking back and enjoying life, however, life had other plans for me. I now own and run several businesses. The one I am most proud of is the development/construction of Ultra high end, high quality luxury homes. This gives me the opportunity to buy at least two sets of HT equipment a year, and probably helps keep my own "I wants" under control. The other business is boring so I won't go into it. I also teach several subjects at the local university and junior college. My life got even busier when I met and married my current wife Eileen, a critical care nurse at a local hospital. She has two young children, and that has come as a shock to my system since my own two are successfully grown up and I thought I was over the parenting task for good! Told ya life had some surprises for me...LOL.

I've been into audio equipment since I was 11 years old. I was an early adopter of that magical multi-channel format called.... STEREO! My first amp, I recall, was a 15wpc tube amp by a little known company called Harman Kardon. My first speakers were by Fisher, followed by KLH (the original KLH) followed by AR (the original AR 1s). You see, even back then I had upgradeitus. My first receiver was HKs first solid state receiver which I bought in college. I later replaced that with a HK Citation A amp and Citation B preamp (maybe those letters are reversed, my memory isn't that good). My first turntable was a Garrard, which I later replaced with a high end ROTEL which I kept all the way though till I retired my vinyl collection in favor of CDs in the 80s.

Hi, I'm Hank Frankenberg from Austin, Texas. I just noticed this interesting thread. Me? I'm a Christian, have four kids (18, 21, 24 and 26), 2 boys and 2 girls, who are all very intelligent and have a strong sense of humor (inherited). I play clarinet in the Austin Symphonic Band ( http://www.asband.org ), a non-profit volunteer group of about 85 wind and percussion players, and if I may say, one of the best 2 or 3 in the nation
I also play in church orchestra, and the Wurst Band at Scholz Garten. I love SCUBA diving in the Caribbean - Cozumel a dozen times, Akumal twice, and Belize and Bonnaire. I've been into hi-fi many years, and built my first speakers at about age 16 and built an H.H. Scott integrated tube amp at about age 17 (still have it and will re-cap it soon). We have an active Home Theater group here in Austin with a couple of very active and well-read threads (one has over 59,000 hits) on another forum: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htfo...?s=&forumid=25
I hope that's okay to post here. Here's my crude, low-res web site:
http://www.geocities.com/hankbond1/index with some pics of some speakers I've built.
Chris, I've been reading your HT-building exploits in HT Builder magazine and have enjoyed it very much.
Lex, I'm a car guy too. Last year I bought a BMW 330i with sport pkg and what a car! Truly the ultimate driving machine. I've driven lots of cars, but BMW got it right!
I just noticed this thread as the only one I usually visit here is the Mission Possible thread moderated by the two grand gentlemen and Poohbahs of DIY speaker-building, Jon and Thomas. I read their posts and try to absorb a molecule or two of their tremendous knowledge. What a great asset they are to this forum and the DIY community! :T

i got into this hobby a few years ago when a roommate had a "surround system". it was just a pieced together auditory abortion, but it sounded ok. i started playing around with cheap gear (you know, $100 here and there on ebay, ewww), and got decent results. then i went to a local high-end shop to just look around, and see what kind of COOL stuff there was out there.

i was shopping for cable for my cheap speakers, and after passing out a few times when i saw speaker cable for $2.25 a ft, i decided to get some. before i left, the salesman wanted to show me the coolest speakers in the store. i agreed. they happened to be Meridian DSP8000's in piano black, with a full meridian 800 system behind it. to this day i havent heard anything significantly better.

this has always been the goal to get to. i have tried to make my system get as close as possible to what i heard that day. now i have magnepan tympani 1D's up front, SMG-C's as rears, driven primarily by pass labs and rotel amplifiers. i also have dual velodyne HGS15x's to augment the bass. i use audioquest pike's peak speaker cable and audioquest jaguar interconnects. source is a denon dvd-3910, and i have some other stuff too.

now, i work at that exact store, and actually sit in the desk of the salesman who introduced me to all this. he works for our custom division now. we sell b&w, rotel, meridian, classe, sonus fabre, velodyne, denon, b&k, and some others. im still going to school at the moment, so i dont have a huge budget, but the promotional stuff keeps me with new gear.

in addition to working in the field (if anyone has questions about the gear i carry, let me know, i can answer it for you), i also got into DIY audio a few years back. i have a pretty complete shop in my basement that i use to build mainly amplifiers and electronics. i have no formal knowledge of this stuff, so i cant really design anything, but i can put it together. check out my site for a few projects ive done, or that i am doing. i dont update my system on there as much as i should, because it always changes. but my projects are updated frequently.

I'm 43 and currently I'm the director of technology for a startup company selling Biometric security products (fingerprint scanning authentication).
I've been in IT for 15 or so years, and was a graphic artist for several before that.

I've always loved movies, and migrated from a regular TV and stereo to the first signs of a home theater. When I got my first CRT front projector about 10 years ago the learning curve was steep, so I got on an earlier incarnation of the internet to ask questions. And after some time I was also answering a few questions and ended up moderating on the Digital Theater Forum for about 5 years until it fizzled away, but before that I was invited to join the team at HTG, and it's always been an enjoyable environment here since then. :B

I've been married for 12 years but together for 21 so far (no kids), and thankfully she has tolerance for both my home theater hobby and cars (my other hobby). I have a 1959 Karmann Ghia convertible that I've restored twice now in 24 years, and I've got a Viper R/T10, which is also not particularly stock.

Happily our little house in San Jose (S.F. Bay Area) has a full basement, and that's my home theater and home office. :T And sometimes I come out of the movie cave for sunlight and a drive. 8)

                                                      Guess I'll take a shot.......

                                                      I am 35 and an audio/video addict......wait, that's another meeting! LOL
I have been married since 1996 and now am blessed with three great kids, ages 7, 5, and 3. My hands are full and electronic equipment in danger with kids this age, but that's life.

I am an Air Traffic Controller for the FAA in NH and just hit my 15 year anniversary there. Still waiting to give Chris a 360 degree turn when he comes eastbound!! My wife is a communications specialist in technical support at the FAA also, so we share alot of stories.

My love for audio started when my father gave himself a great 2ch system and wrapped each piece with everyone else's name on the cards.......upgraditis was born! With marraige and kids, upgrading has taken a nine year layoff, but September saw a return to form, thank goodness. The new Rotel's have served me well and have spurned more changes on the horizon.

Besides audio/video, I enjoy fitness, small carpentry around the house, and landscaping my house. Any project with an end result of significant improvemant is woth doing.

                                                      Erik

Hi all, i am an international student from Malaysia, currently a senior in the University of Missouri-Rolla. I addicted to audio and hifi stuffs after I came to the states, greatly influenced by one of my senior.

I love listen to music long time ago but back then I listen music using portable sony cdwalkman, since I wasn’t quite able to afford good pc speakers. Yeap, PC speakers, hifi speakers didn’t even come into my mind yet at that time. After I started studying in the uni here I bought my dell pc set with top of the line Altec Lancing speakers, later on switched to Klipsch Promedia 5.1. Klipsch Promedia 5.1 was one of the best computer speakers around at that time and I enjoyed music a lot with that speakers. I thought I was satisfied.
But thing changed after I listened to my senior’s home theater system. His system consists of all NHT speakers powered by one of the best Yamaha receiver at that time, and a quite decent Pioneer dvd player. I was completely blown away by the sound of his home theater system, either in music or dvd movies.

Listening to music using computer speakers and true home theater equipments are simply day and night difference I realized. So I started reading audio magazines, reading audio forums to learn about what’s in audio and hifi world. Until the time came, I bought my first ever B&W DM601 S3, powered by Yamaha RX-V1300 receiver. It took me more than 3 years to complete my 5.1 system, with all B&W 600 series speakers and a velodyne DD Sub.
Words just can’t describe how satisfied I am when enjoying music and movies with my own system. I know there are far better equipments out there but for right now, I am all set! I am dreaming of newer B&W Nautilus speakers in the future, with Jeff Rowland as their amplifier. :
Also, I hope my future wife is also an audio lover so that I don’t have to worry about WAF factor. :T

                                                            My system pictures...

                                                                Hello all,

Its been a long time since I posted to the forum, but thought re-introducing myself would be the best way to start back.

I first joined some time ago when I purchased a ROTEL RSP-1066 and an new formed thread had sprung up in this forum where we could all trade tips etc. Most certainly that thread helped my get the most from my 1066...however, times have changed and I have pursued a new direction in my listening set-up...

Myself...? 26 years old at time of posting. From Boston, MA, USA, but living in Edinburgh, Scotland.....hoping to move to Spain sometime in the near future...I have just completed my PhD in molecular genetics here at the university of Edinburgh, continuing work here as a post-doctoral researcher for the time being.

My main hobbies are computers and music. I play in bands as a drummer, with my main styles/influences being funk, hip-hop, Latin jazz, swing and prog rock. I guess it’s from my love of making music that I derive my love of listening to it. In recent years I have grown arguably obsessed with perfecting my listening set-up for clinical accuracy (am I the only one :W ?). When I listen, its a deeply involved process...I am always analysing composition structure and arrangement, time changes, dynamics etc. I like to consider both the technical and artistic aspects of the recording from both the level of the musicians and producers. Thus mainly I am interested in achieving a listening set-up that provides me with the most information I extract from the medium. Though recently I have begun to dabble in tubes and vinyl just to see what all the fuss is about. More on this some other time.

I guess this post is getting too long…This is a great community and I am glad to be a part of it! Be speaking with many of you soon I am sure.

                                                                Al the best,

                                                                    MUAAHAHAHAHAHA...

I went with the mackies because in the listening demos I did I could not find a single passive speaker / stereo amp combo that out performed them in the same price range. Mackies cost me £1100. I tried B&W, Monitor Audio, Tannoy, Cyrus and Kef mostly with Arcam and Rotel amps (Cyrus w/ Cyrus amp) in this range. They alll had pros and cons, but for the money it was the mackies that just blew me away.

It also didnt hurt that they have rock solid linear frequency response from about 35Hz to about 22kHz and that they come factory matched to with 0.5db of each other.

Also I support active speaker design as a great bang for buck solution. Monitors have the limitation of not being able to "fill" a large room (as these are mid to near field monitors), not because they dont get loud enough (something like 250w a piece!) but because 3D imaging is lost easily at distance. That said, the makies maintain reasonable imaging across the horizontal plane from left to right, certainly better than other monitors I've used in the past.

Considering that I always end up with a rather small room to set up my gear in, the mackies ended up being the best price for quality that also satisfied my craving for accurate reproduction.

As for the music...wish I got to play more often. Had been playing fairly regularly but stopped playing for like 6 months to write thesis. So climbing back into the practice room now, trying to sort out some jam sessions with friends. I know what you mean about chops...so I am really eager to get back in shape again, I know it'll take a good few months....

A bit about myself: I am a 27 year old pharmacy student in philadelphia. I am originally from california and will be moving back after graduation (may 06). I have a previous degree in Biology from University of California Santa Cruz. I love home theater and electronics. I guess my passion for this stuff started back in 1995 when i got a job as a sound technician for my college at UCSC. And after that time, i have been addicted to home theater, and i guess it will be one of those hobbies that will never excape me. But thats ok, cause i love it.

After that, hopefully get a house and finally give all my electronics a proper home.

I have looked at the heading for this post, I don't know how many times, and thought it was a thread about forum rules. Instead, it has turned out to be really interesting!

I am a Los Angeles native, Pasadena in fact. We are a endangered species. I wont give my age but, I am old enough that the first movie I worked on was "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolfe". In the 60's I toured with Janis Joplin, and worked at the Filmore West. I just finished working on the film, "Ocean's 12". I own a company that rents equipment to production companies. It is my second company. The first one I sold and thought I had retired to Costa Rica. Somehow I got sucked back into Hollywood and started a second company. I try to stay out of working on films and stick with just commercials. Which is like a paid vacation they are so easy.

I grew up with a home theater. My father converted our garage into a theater with his own home made speakers and amps and a 16mm projector. Yes, before vhs and dvd, you could buy films on 16mm. Plus, he would bring films home from Warner Bros. Studio where he worked.

I did the same. At one time I owned over 200 16mm films that I kept in a film storage lot 3 blocks south of Hollywood Blvd. When vhs came out I started selling off the films. Then came laser discs, another big investment, then DVDs.

At one time I had a all Theta setup with 8 Vandersteen speakers, two Vandersteen subs, and a Paradigm sub. Then I got tired of HT and switched to two channel instead. Now my HT is a Sony TV and a DVD player in the den. Which I seldom turn on.

Hobbies pretty much revolve around the ocean. Surfing, swimming, sailing. Also, bbq.
I have a terrific wife. We have been together since we were 17. She used to dance, both in plays and occasionally on TV shows. We have a litter of kids, who also have their own litters. Some pets, including a large Sulcata Tortoise (over 200 lbs).

Anyone visiting or living in LA is welcome to come visit.

The daily newspaper I worked at was across the street from the CBC studio that was doing a show called Jamboree, or something, and Anne was one of the singers.
