    Using your THX

I was reading a thread at another forum and there was a question pertaining to the use of THX Cinema with the new Seven disc.

I have recently noticed that THX with most DD/DTS disc results in a dulling of the overall sound and dynamics. At first I thought that this was because I also use MIT speaker wire but, now I wondering if anyone else have notice the same.

From my experience, the Cinema re-equalization function of THX processing can affect the overall tonality of the media in question. For those unfamiliar with it, Cinema Re-Eq is a function that takes to 'edge' out of a movie's dialogue. A movie that sounds bright to the point of harshness can be mellowed out a little. However it is, I believe, more of a function of the software than the hardware. I can't seem to find a rhyme or reason as to why some DVDs sound better with Re-Eq and some don't. This also extends into the area of THX certified DVDs. I always listen to the first couple of minutes while switching the THX on and off. This allows me to find what I like and settle in. Like I said, it varies.

But, as I've become quite fond of saying: if you don't like it, then it ain't right.

Well, I usually use Logic 7 as my default. But for a DPL movie with brighter dialogue, I will switch to THX. Of course, for 5.1 EX, I use that mode now, and don't notice it being particularly closed in on my system.

        Ken,
That is the point that I was trying to express. It dosen't add up to me that, Re-Eqing any disc would take away from what to me is "that open sound". The new Seven disc is suppose to have a blip that warns one not to use your THX setting because it has been remixed for near field play. Could this be the case for many dvd's before this version of Seven and we just were not warned?

        Lex,
Ah yes, Logic 7. I forgot about you fortunate Harman Industries owners:B. When you have Logic 7, all else (in most cases) are second best

But, I would think that the rest of us that have the option of using THX should in most cases, find this to be the superior mode of listening.

Is it possible that my post processing is just screwed? Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

I follow the same rules as Lex with my 7.2 set-up.

Since the end of December, I have been playing with my speaker position. Moving them an inch here and there. I finally have my soundstage where I can use THX mode and enjoy it's benefits on the majority of films that I view.

It is also ironic that my two channel playback (sound) has increased two fold. I guess position is everything!

I really haven't found any disc where I thought THX processing was an improvement for discrete digital sources. I use standard AC3 or DTS settings. For Prologic, I think it is an improvement over standard.

Wireless is right there. I think for Dolby Pro-Logic stuff, it's great. Was always my choice back in the video tape age. But not using any tape now, that need has changed considerably.

While I agree that prologic is it's strongest hand, I also think that we have to train our ears so to speak to it's digital application. Similar to the way we view our tv after proper calibration. But as always this is my subjective opinion.

The DD mix was awful. The rears...

I have tried asking this question on a PC hardware forum but they have told me to go to the home theater forums because my question is to do with THX quality, and no one in the PC forums has any idea, even the manufacturers of the products!! It is a bit wordy but please bear with me:
