Passive bi-amping!! Does the power to the high/mids need to be the same as to the LF?

    Hello...

I bi-amp in a passive mode with 225 watts to the highs/mids and 250 watts to the lows. If I increased the power (450 watts) to the lows, would this present any problems? Thanks!!

You can run higher power to the woofers if you want. Yes, you can run lower power to the HFE speakers. 450 watts/side is overkill and a waste of power for normal woofers, unless your HT is the size of a municipal auditorium

Actually the pro system we ran for medium venues had a 3,000 wpc Crest amp for the subs, 3,000 wpc Crest on the mid bass, 1,000 wpc crown amps for the mids, and 250 wpc JBL Urei's for the highs!!!
Each stack had two cabinets per frequency band, one channel per cabinet, that's 19,000 watts for a stereo setup!!!
As you can see, your wattage can vary tremendously, and you can mix and match so the strong points of each amp are used to their best advantage.

Yes, I had long heard that the bass consumed most of the power in a single feed situation. So 450 bass, and 100 treble, is not out of touch with the realm of possibilities.

          Hi Guys!

          My first post here!

          Will,
The differences between the wattages for high/mids vs lows is one issue. When I told you that biamping the bridged Citation 7.1's 450 watts with your Nakamichi's 225 watts might create problems...I was referring to the huge potential "gain" differences. For example, for an given SPL level, your lows could be playing 5-6 dB higher than your mids/highs and you have no way of adjusting this.

Pretend the mids/highs are bookshelfs and your lows are subwoofers placed under the bookshelfs. If you could use pink noise to calibrate the speakers, it's very unliked that all four would be set to "zero" on your prepro speaker levels.
When I drive my mains and/or rears with one unbridged citation amp channel, then drive my center with the bridged 300 watts, I need to set the center to "minus 5" or so.

          Hi Lex!

            Watts per channel vs N802
            by Jeff
I recently purchased a pair of N802's. The amp which powers them is a Rotel RB-1080 ( 200 wpc at 8 ohms, 330 wpc at 4 ohms). I brought home a demo
Proceed Amp 2 ( 125 wpc at 8 ohms, 250 wpc at 4 ohms) to compare.

I know Proceed is a good amp. But the N802's are power hungry...

Questions about using the Dayton Reference subwoofers on a passive design
            by fjhuerta
After much thought about the new design I've been working on, I finally decided against a WMTMW, and decided on an MTM with a subwoofer.

The M's are the Dayton RS225. The T is the SEAS 27TBFC.

Preliminary crossover points are 1.4 KHz, L-R 4th order from mids to tweeters,...

Value of an amp doubling wpc 8ohm vs 4ohm
            by Gump
I know this has been discussed before but I did a search and it's a hard subject to explain to a computer because I couldn't find anything.

How important is it for an amp's wpc to double from 8ohm's to 4 ohm's? Is it really that big of a deal? And I'm talking pure SQ here.

            Passive Radiator

A passive radiator, often shortened to simply 'PR', is a component used in loudspeaker and subwoofer design to enhance bass performance. It is a type of driver without a voice coil and magnet structure but has a diaphragm and suspension that moves in response to changes in air pressure inside the enclosure. A passive radiator is located within the same volume as the driver it is supplementing, but could be placed on any side of the cabinet. When the active driver moves...

I know not many here run active systems, but I thought I'd share this since Jon is probably one of the few who can shed light on the causes of the differences I heard.

So I've been working on some small TM's for the last year and finally came to a place where I was happy with the voicing...
