    Tip for nail-biting dvd collectors

I don't bite my nails, but they are always clipped with very little nail to use when trying to pry off those #@@$*$# security seals on dvd cases. The first thing I do when I get home with some new titles is tear them open and catalogue them before putting them on " the to view shelf". And I usually buy three or four at a time, so it can be awfully hard on the fingers trying to remove 3 security seals per dvd, especially when they don't come off clean and you have to remove them in pieces, and having them stick to your fingers as well.
Well here's a tip. Take a sharp-pointed knife. Slip the point under the top edge of the seal and lift gently. This usually lifts enough of the sticky buggers to allow you to get a good grip and peel off. But try not to slit the seal down the middle or you will have to peel it off in sections. This may not work for everyone, but it works for me.
At least it will save a set of sore fingers, or having your wife break her precious nails trying to help out.

    Good info George!

I have nails and I hate to open dvds anymore. While I understand why the three security strips are there, they are a pain in the butt. Most of the time it will break into three seperate strips. Adding to the frustration.

Atleast the pre-viewed copies from my local rental store are safe ! :B

Don't get me started! Before I finished opening one the other day, I know I said 24 cuss words. Yes, it was complete with the crap sticking to my fingres, 3 piedes, both sides. Besides, you can't stop a thief. If he can get thorugh the plastic exterior, do you really think that tape is going to stop him?

Maybe soon, we will just by empty cases, and pick up the DVD at checkout, or mail them proof of purchase, then they mail us the DVD, lol.

I am so over this, it isn't funny.

That makes two of us, Lex. One I could maybe accept, but three stickers is overkill.

The number of stickers, and other security devices built into DVD packages is driven by the major retail stores, not the studios or DVD developers.

We sell our titles to companies like Best Buy, Tower Records, and others. They all insist on having three of the stick on security labels, and a percentage of discs must also have a magnetic security device.

These security measures add at least $0.10 per disc to the manufactured price of the product, which translates to at least $0.30 at retail.

I wish we did not need any of these security measures, but the large retail chains are faced with significant DVD disc theft issues, and these measures are designed to combat that problem.

            Oh yeah, another tip....

take the sticky strips you take off and use them to hold together the ball of wrapping.

Hey, that stuff is like glue, static electricity, it sticks to ya..... especially the little small pieces. And if ya got a ceiling fan on, it blows everywhere.

            It works for me.

I have a DVD/CD shrinkwrap opener from Express.com. But if you don't have one of those, a knife works as well.

As for the three stickers adding security, note that when I got a DVD at Best Buy with a blank CD-R inside, all three stickers were intact. It is possible for a thief to remove and re-apply the stickers without making it obvious to the victim.

                Hey George

Maybe you can use the security strip to hold that gaping wound together your going to get when you gouge the knife into your hand.

At least that's what would happen to me.

                  Hey, Robbie

I try to be careful when handling a knife.

My computer desk is in the same room as my HT so, i reach in the drawer for my utility knife and slice down the seams... right down the middle of all three sides usually then, just peel'em off. It is a pain in the ass the way they tape these dvd's. 8O
