'Parallel' migration to blue-laser DVD urged

It's never as straight forward as you would want it to be is it??

—A proposal put together by a Hollywood studio suggests that blue-laser-based high-definition DVD recorders will initially become available as VCR replacements only in the Japanese market. The proposal, written before the last meeting of the DVD Forum and obtained by EE Times, predicted that the rest of the world will have to wait until 2004 or 2005 before seeing blue/red laser players that can play back red-laser-based high-definition content and blue-laser prerecorded HD-DVD media.

      Bare with me...

Ok...they release the recordable HD-DVD in Japan and Asia (which just happens to be the number one source of big time piracy). A couple of years later they introduce HD-DVD to the rest of the world but with a catch: it's marketed as an improved technology over that which was released in Asia.

It just so happens this improved version is totally incompatible with the Asian version. "Well, of course it's incompatible...it's a better format...we worked the bugs out in the Asian market to deliver an improved product to the US and Euroupe."

That's my speculation but I think it an accurate depiction of the narrowmindedness of Hollywood and those seeking to control intellectual properties. In other words, it's what happens when business people make creative and technical decisions.

Yeah John, you'd think they'd figure it out by now. Could we do it right the first time though?

As long as politics is involved the industry can continue to milk the consumer for new emerging technologies, abandoniing yesterdays, all the while placing the blame on the politics....

I just wish it was politics and ownership of intellectual properties and such. The bottom line is that it's "the bottom line" that drives ALL of Hollywood's decisions. If it takes away from their profit, it is verboten! Logic, reason and promoting/harboring love of movies/music has little or nothing to do with the studios' decision making process.

                [/rant off]

Sorry all. I've really become a cynic about the studios, HD and the home marketing of movies and music in the last year. :x

Well David, I think you're right. The bottom line is the dollar. And the passion of the art is no more. What's sad is, it isn't just limited to the Blue laser market. Actors, Directors, etc (not all but enough) have fallen to the driver of measured success.

Sadly, we have become, a numbers driven society...period.

Can you believe it has been 3 years since the last HTG server migration? It has, and it was time to get the OS updated, PHP, and the database to stay in the supported versions for the forum software.

Most of the migration was copy/paste along with using rsync and SCP. All data should be...

Improved memory backup software for 1068?
                      by Bostonears
The firmware release notes for the RSP-1068 V1.2.3 to V1.2.4 include:
                      "- Improved memory backup software"

Can anyone please describe exactly what this means? What's the improvement? Is the user interface for the backup procedure different? Or, is something changed about...

Or at least compared to my last attempt it's improved. I was about to order a working one and read some comments and some of the issues were things I had trouble with already, so why pay $$ and still have issues? Maybe this will be helpful to someone, so far I think it will take care of my circle...

                      lens filter on pj?
                      by Jurgen
                      Hi all,

I was wondering if any of you have experimented with lens filters. When I had my Panasonic PTAE 100, I was a bit disappointed by the screen door effect and the poor depth of field. Then one day while I was watching Harry potter with my brother, he put up his sunglasses. At first...
