Interesting RTA freeware

If you have a laptop and want to play around with a free 1 octave RealTime Analyzer program it can be downloaded HERE

I bought the 1/24th octave version and will be testing it out tomorrow

I think this looks just like the tool to turn a basic laptop into a quick checkup system for your room acoustics- the narrow band modes are truly useful for stuff like checking for comb filtering from multiple arrival times. The higher res versions still have a fast acquisition time on my Sony; all I need to decide on is a good portable mic.

It works very well. The 1/24th octave version is quite interesting, and is a steal for $100. It's more accurate and easier to use than my $1000 portable RTA.

A laptop loaded with software like this combined with a nice microphone is a great way to measure speakers and how they function in the room

What would you recommend as a "good" microphone?
How much is that going to run me?

The cheapest 'good' mic is the little calibrated one from ETF and it's $250 with a pre-amp

Remember that the RS SPL meter has a RCA output that can let it function as a mic. Obviously it's not all that accurate but it's an inexpensive way to get started
