Since everyone usually checks into the Chalet, I decided this was the place to offer this opportunity.

So, here is the next batch of Naxos Musical Journey check discs from Alpha DVD. We are giving away four copies of each of the following titles

Beethoven Symphony #6
Chopin Piano Concertos #1 & #2
Elgar Cello Concero
French Festival
Grieg: Peer Gynt
Mahler Symphony #1
Night Music Volume 2

There are a total of 28 discs to give away. Same deal as last time, these discs are bit for bit
identical as the final production versions, but they don't have color labels or the final package.

I will start things off by saying I would like the Elgar Cello Concert. The Cello is such a beautiful instrument on my Sonus fabers, I can't resist.

So, that's one Elgar cello down. I ask that each of you state the number of your disc and title RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE MESSAGE, DON'T MAKE ME HUNT FOR IT! So, for example, if the next poster wanted Elgar, he would say, Elgar, and that's number 2 as the first line of his message. We count to 4 for each disc and when they are gone they are gone. 28 total, and no more!

Sorry I dont have much marketing information for these new titles right now. Apparently I finished them up before the cover art and synopsis text has been completed by the distributor (DVD International). All 7 titles are quite good, with Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound audio tracks, and some simple English subtitles which were added as a result of suggestions by HTGuide members.

I am happy to have this chance to give out some free stuff to HTGuide members.

I only sent one disc to each person. Since we did not have all the names and addresses available when I shipped the first batch I did not want to send more than one disc out in case someone else had requested that disc but had not provided their address yet.

Once I get the first disc out to everyone I can make a second pass and send an extra disc out to as many people as I can.

THe "French Festival" disc was waiting in my PO box this morning. It is playing right now (second time through). The musical selections are an interesting mix of familiar "standards" and some less-well-known works by front-rank French classical composers. Although the gift package does not include liner notes or artwork, the disc itself has enough information (via on screen menu options) to satisfy anyone but a music pedant. :>) So, even on the unfamiliar material, I could easily find out what I was listening to.

I've tried all three output modes: DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 and DD 2.0 and I think all of them are quite acceptable. OK, if you must know, and this will surprise some folks who have known me for a while, I give the edge to the DTS track for sound with a "realistic" soundstage, no "screechy" high notes, and no bleeding of instrumental sounds into the rear channels. (The 2 channel mode was actually the better of the two Dolby tracks on all those points.)

I just listened first time through (no video) -- the music is very well played -- and I am now enjoying the video content as well. This is NOT "movie music" -- as mentioned before, it is a compilation of selections of French classical music. The pictures, while sort-of related to the music in mood and content, are not directly "synched" to the music the way they would be with a movie soundtrack. It is more like a picturesque travelogue accompanied by exquisite music. But that is no problem; I wasn't really expecting a "movie". In fact, the music by itself is worth having the disc for; the video is a nice "bonus".

Naxos did a fine job with the musical performances and the folks who put together the DVD deserve a round of applause -- this is a very high quality production and quite entertaining.

These titles actually wont be available to the general public until February 2002.
