    When the fun is over...

I have finally hit the wall, tonight I fired up the projector with the idea of working on a geometry problem I very had since day one.
The only thing I ended up doing was day dreaming for an hour.
As I gazed at the screen I suddenly realized that I may have made one of the worst purchases of my life
I can remember when watching a movie on my 35" TV was relaxing and fun. I've owned this projector for two months, and not once have I not gone in a had to tweek something. In that amount of time I bet I've logged 200 hours staring at test patterns and adjusting.
Tonight it hit my like a ton of bricks...my hobby is no longer fun,
    I long for my 35" tv...Kenny

    What a profound statement Kenny.....

Sorry to hear, maybe you just need to take a break and forget about it for a while, that, or understand that all things in life can't be perfect

Barring that, I have a 36" I'll trade up even steven to take your cares away

Kenny, put the color comparator down, that's right, now back away slowly. No, don't look at it!

Seriously one of the best things you can do is leave it alone for a few days/weeks. I use to have the same problem with my 2 channel audio system. I was spending my Saturdays listening to differences between silver interconnects and copper! Every time I started listening I had to toe the speakers in another 1/8th of an inch. Best thing that ever happened to me was divorce, becasue the stereo system was boxed up and I couldn't listen to it for 5 months. Now, I just hear the music.

You need some time away when the honeymoon is over!

I was feeling your pain last night, and It wasnt even my RPTV, Somebody from over in Salem EMailed me and asked if I could come over with My DTC-100 and see if he can grab the DTV from Portland and bang we picked it up standing in his HT and threw the antenna on his table and the picture looked horrid so we went in the User converg only to get minor picture fix, so we proceeded to dismantle his set and do a manual focus which was definately off but still only improved the picture slightly, on to electrical Focus and then raping his service menue in Coarse and fine convergence to get his geometery correct and with all this we whip up the Best HD demo and it still looks slightly better then progressive after what was basically a full blown calibration minus a complete grayscale ( you got it , thats probably later this week)
I can tell this set will probably cost some time and Its Not even mine..........
I was in a Hi Fi shop in Portland a week ago and they had an awesome theater setup with a Sony G90 and a $20K scaler, Basically $70K is what they had into the theater and I asked " Is that as good as the Picture gets?" Looking offended , the guy told me its been professionally calibrated and La De Da , I came to the conclusion Ill pass on FPTV even though so many can get such good results, I dont want to become a slave to my HT and It sounds like FPTVs take some tender loving care.
I feel for ya but I think laying it aside for awhile sounds like a good Idea
        Which Scaler do you have?

          Hey Kenny,

Sorry you're not having fun lately, I understand how you feel, have to work and plan sometimes to avoid it. This is the first day in Germany I haven't had jet lag to knock you out on your feet, after putting in 15-6 hours each day with company people. Sometimes it drains you, and right now you sound a little drained. Maybe there's something else you can do to recharge a bit, and come back to it later. Also, I've found I do better with some projects that I *know* involve a lot of work by planning stages of completion, and just knowing that things aren't going to be perfect for a while, but at least they'll be enjoyable.

Take care, and go watch a movie, or do something else fun you enjoy!

          Mit Gruessen aus Deutscheland,

          Jon

Kenny, you certainly sound frustrated. After you've stepped away, and you want to discuss these problems, and if there is any resolution, I am sure guys are ready to try and assist. Myself, all I know about a projector is that light comes out of them. But hey, I don't know much about women either, and look at all the fun I have had there! lol.

Seriously, goodluck getting ahold of your sanity and becoming satisfied once again with your theater. If that means, throwin the FP out, and going to RPTV, then so be it!

              Hi,Kenny-
I had your disease a few years ago when I installed my CRT projector.I tweaked and fussed, and the more knowledgable I beacme, the fussier I became. It got to the point where I was even tweaking during a movie. That's when I realized the problem was more me than the projector. I had a few friends in who couldn't believe how beautiful a picture I was getting. That's when I stood back and said the hell with it. Time to enjoy. I still that old CRT and use it for full screen 4:3 movies, but two years ago I bought a Sony VPL400 LCD projector, and after a few days of playing with the white balance settings, I haven't touched it since. Just play and enjoy. One thing, though. Once a year I have to tweak the convergence on the CRT, but it is only a touch up and takes about a half hour.
What I'm trying to say,Kenny, is stand back for awhile. See what other people think of the picture your projector is producing. Chances are they'll say it is superb. Really, it's time to get back to watching and enjoying movies.
              Regards,
              George

Thanks guys, I did step back...for about half a day. I sat in my HT room staring at Godzilla (that's what we call it, it's huge and makes alot of noize) and decided no way I could sit here and feel sorry for myself...I just got a toy many can only dream of!
So at 9:15 pm I set every adjustment on this thing back to default and started over, by 12 midnight I wrapped it up, looking it's best yet! the geometry isn't as perfect as I'd like, but I can live with it for awhile as is. I immediately boxed the Colorimeter up, and sent it back to TAW on friday, this will keep me from screwing around with REF WHITE and KELVIN settings!
The last couple days I have done nothing but minor convergence type things and it's been easy on my mind...however, today I started building my Hush Box...ahhhh, and torture never stops...Kenny

                  Hang in there, Kenny-

I imagine if I ever knock over enough 7-11's to finally pop for a 10HT, I'll be going through the same stuff trying to get the color temp, contrast, and everything *except* the geometry optimized!

                  Regards,

I'm hoping to get a look at my first D-ILA and DLP in the next few days, met a guy the other day who lives here in Pcola, has an Ampro CRT, D-ILA, and DLP all at his place, so I can't wait to see the differences.
