    Not Sure Where to Put This One

    I’d have written this a couple of nights ago, but we had a power outage and computer freeze-ups before I got to it. I saw the Doors of the 21st century at the DTE Energy Theater in Clarkston, MI on Sunday, June 26. In addition to the Doors were Pat Travers, the Yardbirds, Vanilla Fudge, and John Kay & Steppenwolf. I did not time any of the sets, but noted that they were shorter than what might normally be expected, which was fine, considering that there were five acts. I was unfamiliar with Pat Travers, but he was a great opening act. I thoroughly enjoyed the Yardbirds. Drummer Jim McCarty and guitarist Chris Dreja were the original members in the band. They played their most well known songs as well as some from their new album. The whole set was well performed, with the gem being “a song not usually associated with the Yardbirds, i. e., “Dazed & Confused”, which the original band played, but never recorded. The Vanilla Fudge had all of its original members. They seemed to have the most energy, with the Yardbirds running a close second. John Kay put on a dynamic performance, but something seemed to be missing, but I can’t put my finger on exactly what it was. The Doors had the longest set and did the most kibitzing between songs.

    I didn’t want to do a full revue here cuz I’d be typing all night, but kinda wondered what any of you thought of these reconstituted bands getting back together for shows like this.
    The reason for this thought was that I saw a somewhat similar act last summer called “the heroes of British Pop” featuring Terry Sylvester of the Hollies and Billy J. Kramer, who sang some of their own songs and others of that mid-sixties era. Eric Burdon was supposed to be at that show, but got sick.

    I think that the “Doors” would have been a great show for anyone who was unfamiliar with the bands involved as well as a fine “trip down memory lane” for the rest of us. I had not been aware that this new version of the Yardbirds was this active. I may now get their new release. I hope to see them in a concert setting where they can spread out more. I had been a fan in the past, and was glad to hear that this current version of the band can create some excitement. I enjoyed the “Heroes” show for the same reasons. A chance to hear great music live that I never thought I’d hear live again by anyone other than a tribute band.

    That whole idea is just too cool! I'd be in line for tickets for a show like that, although the Doors without Jim Morrison would be rather strange. Pat Travers, eh? An excellent guitarist in his day, from Canada I believe. I have a couple of his albums from my un-reconstructed hard-rock years - Putting It Straight and Crash And Burn. He's from the school of blues-influenced rock, similar to Robin Trower, Jeff Beck etc.

      Jack, getting the band together is a big risk if the musicians just aren't up to it any more, but when it comes off it really comes off. I've been playing the bootleg Cream Reunion concert (5 May) and I think the musicianship is excellent, even if the sound quality isn't exactly hi-fi. I can't wait to see/hear the DVD. Good on them for giving it a go because it could have failed given Jack and Ginger's medical conditions. The rumour is that they're going to play another concert (or concerts) in New York in October, coincidentally at the same time the DVD is released. Funny that.

      David, I was listening to Jeff Beck live at the BB King Club earlier this evening.

          I'm pretty sure that Jack Bruce has had a heart attack, which, depending on how well he recovered, could effect his being able to perform. I've had one, myself, and the residual effect is that I occassionaly have to fish for words when I'm speaking. If anything, I can do more physically than before the attack.

          I haven't heard of any health concerns that Ginger Baker may have.

                Oh, and seeing we're confessing our medical conditions, I underwent surgery for prostate cancer two years ago. They got it early, and I have made an excellent recovery (many men don't, but I won't go into that here...). I've helped quite a few PC patients through their situations since then. I'm happy to do the same for any HTGuide member who finds himself in that predicament, though through private messages.

                  Of course I'm sorry that you were ill, but I cngratulate you on your recovery and hope that nobody here has to take you up on your generous offer.

                    The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 232,090 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2005. About 30,350 men will die of it. 1 man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime. 1 man in 34 will die of it.

                    If you apply the 1 in 6 ratio to the number of men who belong to the HTGuide Forum, then I'm afraid that quite a large number of our fellow members will be unlucky. Fortunately a high proportion of the men who do get PC will get it later in life when it tends to grow slowly. However many men will also get it at a relatively young age. I was 49.

                    The moral of the story is to get a regular PSA test. Just tick the box on your blood test form when you get your cholesterol and other things checked. I did and that's why it was detected early.

                    Apologies for highjacking this thread, but having cancer tends to spoil your enjoyment of your hi-fi system, and I'm trying to do something about it.

                          Thanks guys. I'm a really big Frank Zappa fan so I'm aware of his death from prostate cancer. He was my current age when he died. My favourite Zappa albums are:
                          * One Size Fits All
                          * Apostrophe
                          * Zoot Allures
                          * Joe's Garage.
                          Frank was a prodigious creator of music and a seriously bizarre man.

                              If you like FZ, check out Captain Beefheart.

                              There is a compilation available. Just make sure the kids are not around when you play "making Love to a Vampire with a Monkey on my Knee".
