    CES Quickie

This was on the Houston Chronicle home page this morning:

    A 102" plasma!?!?!?!?!?!?! Oh baby....

Paying more for a TV than a car? Uh, no.

My daughter's last care was only $6K, including sales tax and registration; a 99 Camaro with T tops and leather (but only the 200 HP V6). I can imagine paying more than $6K for a display, though not for a plasma...

I shudder to think that my used NEC 9PG+ projector was ~$22K when new. Since it had less than 700 hours on it when I got it for $1600, I'd say the hold up on original value isn't very good compared to a Honda car, for example. Thank heavens, otherwise I could never afford it.

Also in the strange but true department, over the Christmas holidays I managed to score a brand new set of OEM tubes for that 9PG for the day 9 or 10 thousand hours from now when I'll probably be needing new ones. Lucky me, the whole set was under $1K, about half of the original cost. The funny thing is, it's pretty cheap compared with projector bulbs- for 10 K hours of watching, you'd have to expect to pay somewhere between $1600 and $3000 worth of bulbs for a Sony 10HT, for example. Ouch!

I believe I read somewhere that they are actually going to sell this plasma commercially, it is not just a prototype showpiece. The price was something like $60K I think. I don't remember for sure. Mght have been $100K. I'll try and find the link.

I think the point here is that this spurs competition among the manufacturers and among the competing technologies. Need to think far into the future on this one, but if they can make 100"+ Plasmas, when prices do come down then I'm thinking Plasma over my projector and that sends a message to the projector people / DLP.

By the time price of 100" plasma would come down to DLP PJ levels ($10K), plasma will be a dead technology (which I would guess is going to happen within 5 years anyway).
