Will the Industry Schiit their Pants?

Schiit released their latest DAC, the Yggdrasil, aka the 'Yggy'.

Click the FAQ tab on the page for some of Jasson's tongue-in-cheek marketing spiel (always good for a laugh).

HERE is some info from one of company reps regarding the 'new' technology.

I am dying to hear what our resident Maestro thinks of this approach.

Just in case Bill you'd better order a container of these for the industry...

      :roflmao:

Hear is a recent quote from Jason (co-owner of Schiit) earlier this week:

"I'd get in big trouble if I named a couple of the pro studios that have already bought Yggdrasil (and that want AES input). I'd get in bigger trouble if I named a manufacturer of pro gear that was so impressed they're organizing a "pro demo night" featuring Yggdrasil."

        Will they Schiitt themselves?

        Depends.

I had some friends who used to ride around with those when I was a kid in high-school back in the 70's.

              I am talking about the chain-link steering-wheel....obviously.....

Well, this discussion is a little over my head, but I can relate to the request for AES inputs....

But seriously, folks... a thread that's 417 pages long? I'd have to schedule a weeks vacation just to read it! :W

Ok, this is not on the Schiitty topic, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to give a post a "laugh" click. (or a "like") To the bottom left of each post, I see the count of thanks, likes, and laughs, and immediately below that, there's a clickable "Thanks". But I can't find the Laugh or Like.

Should be fixed now, Chris. Somehow the super moderators didn't have access granted to those two buttons. So many things to click when setting these things up and things get missed sometimes.

So I've been reading the thread... following closely.

To sum it up. It sounds like the Schiit Yggdrasil is the real deal. Commenters are comparing it to the MSB Analog, Total Dac, and a couple other higher end DACs. From what I've put together, it's close to them. Does it beat any or all of them... no. But it's in the 95 percentile of those DACs... which at a fraction of some of the DACs... that's pretty good.

Apparently the USB input is the best input on the DAC with Schiit's USB3 input out doing AES/BU as the second favorite. One guy did try out his Audiophilleo and a list of other USB to SPDIF converters (I'd say all in the $700 to $2000 range) and said the USB3 input on the Yggdrasil was his favorite. Which makes me want to know how it'd compare with my Mutec MC1.2 & MC-3+ Smart clock combo...

A few of the positives is people stating it's the most analog sound they've gotten from digital. I think when people are saying that, it's not that the DAC is warm sounding, it's just a very smooth presentation, very neutral as well. They are saying it sounds very much like real instruments and not a presentation of the instruments playing. Basically the DAC seems to get out of the way of the music is probably the best description. I'm wondering if this is more a trait of R2R Ladder DACs more so than what Schiit has done with this DAC. I think even John has said a couple times how his Total DAC sounds more like music than the others he's heard. Apparently the low end on the DAC is pretty phenomenal. Tons of weight, extremely fast and detailed. The detail is what a lot of people are noticing from the DAC. It's not forgiving at all and any little "problem" with what it's being fed it won't hide that. So I think this DAC is extremely detail oriented, so if you have a system that is more towards the clinical side then this DAC will not make your system more musical.

The down or negative sides... It does take a while to break in (over 160 hours, some at over 400 hours). It likes to be on 24/7. If powered off for about an hour, it'll revert back to a "not as good as warmed up state" that is apparently very noticeable. Re-warm-up-time seems to be about a week each time it's been sitting off (over 1 hour). Now it's not as bad as the initial breaking, but doesn't seem to give it's analog sound right away. It does run warm, the case runs warm, enough that people have wondered if it's a concern or not, but apparently that's the way it's made.

So far with all the Hype around this DAC, it seems to be holding pretty good with far far less negative comments as with more positive. The problem I'm seeing is most of it is done at Head-Fi and a lot of the people are coming off Schiit Modi and equipment that is probably Sub $1k range... though their headphones are pretty expensive... so who knows.

One of the posters did compare it to his beloved NAD M51 and said it took about 6 minutes to notice how much better the Yggdrasil was. Which makes me want to get one. ha ha. I think I would've jumped much quicker at getting one if it had a volume control. One of my favorite things about the M51.

It's tough wanting a DAC like this as I think it could be closer to the end game of DACs for me as I'm not willing to spend the big bucks on one. Any question about the DAC and I can pretty much answer it from reading through all the threads I've found on it.

Basically I think it's probably going to be ranked the best DAC under $5k or at least be in the top 1 or 2 on most lists.
                                      Digital Audio makes me Happy.

Very cool, I appreciate the follow-up, Dan. It's the Schiit!!!

I'd be tempted for one as well, if I didn't already have Parasound's zDAC, and the onboard DAC in the Parasound CD 1 disc player that's so awesome.
