News article here reporting that Japan has produced the first BD/DVD hybric disc. No word on coming to USA.
Infinity Storage Media has released the world's first Blu-ray/DVD hybrid disc to the public. The disc, which is a single-side format, allows for DVD players to read the same side that Blu-ray players read from. This is an impressive feat to say the least and will be useful to many consumers.
Currently this product is only available in Japan, so we're unsure if it'll ever make its way to North America, but it's not surprising if it does. This technology will enable the consumer to purchase the Hybrid format in order to build their library for their future purchase of a Blu-ray player while still being able to enjoy the movie.
Hopefully this picks up at the much larger studios resulting in a world-wide release.
