    Receivers as processors

I was looking at upgrading my OutlawAudio 990 for a Denon 3808ci.I like the Audessey processing built in.

What do amp do at idol if not hooked up to anything ?
Here is my LCR "Trio". Way to go guys !

I don't know if the 3808 is anything like my 3805 was but it ran quite hot even used as just a pre.

I picked up a Denon 2808ci, simply to be used as a HDMI 1.3 outboard decoder then sent to my HT pre/pro via multichannel outs. Don't use the amps. I haven't noticed it running hot at all--amps really aren't doing any work at all.

Are you sending that to the pre/pro's MCH analogue input? I thought I read somewhere that there are voltage differences (I may not be expressing this correctly--I'm an historian, not an electrical engineer) between MCH analogue line level inputs and those in a power amp such that this could be problematic. I'm probably way off base though.

It doesn't matter if you are not using the internal amps, and just using the pre-outs. It still puts out power as you turn the volume knob up.

Yeah, I'd be interested to hear if there are issues like that. Yes, I'm using the multichannel analog outputs to my pre/pro multichannel inputs. I've got the Denon volume set to a fixed 0db, (reference volume) and change the volume of the system with my pre/pro.

The volume knob controls input voltage to the amp stage, not power. With no circuit across the speaker terminals the amp stage shouldn't be doing much of anything. You still have a power supply, capacitors, and probably some bias current, but without speakers, there's no amplification.

I have to agree with that, no load no power.

                  A little disclaimer here:

There are many amplifiers, particularly those with tube output stages that require a load across the speaker terminal. The load of the speaker is part of the overall circuit and without it things may start to fail which isn't pretty and can be dangerous. SS amps like those found in AVRs do not fall into this category, but you should always RTFM for your amp to see if speakers should be attached during operation.

Very interesting. I thought the load was part of the circuit too.

How about the Audessey processing ???? Any takers ????

What about the Audyssey processing? (see Club Parasound for a thread I just put in there, about using an HDMI receiver as an outboard decoder for my HT pre/pro. I use Audyssey on the HDMI receiver)

Here is some interesting info I found if you are like me and want to know what you need to achieve certain things with the new audio formats.

I wish I could make this non-model specific, but so far, this is all I know of actually delivering to consumers. Got an Integra press release today.

Looks AMAZING for only $800! Note the deep color capability, Audyssey room correction, HDMI upconversion, and HD audio decoding!
