Warner Bros patent HD DVD/Blue Ray Hybrid Disc

And I thought I was told this was impossible to achieve...

Warner's engineers took it upon themselves to design a disc that can be encoded with a combination of DVD, HD DVD or Blu-ray. These discs, something that Blu-ray and HD DVD developers have said was difficult, if not impossible to make, will take the pressure off consumers on having to decide which format they have…

Well at least one company is trying to use their brain in this "fluster-cuck". I'm a little frightened to know how much studios are going to want for a disc containing 3 formats...and I'd also imagine it doesn't allow for dual layers of any of them but at least someone's actually trying to accomplish something smart and useful. Regardless, I'm not holding my breath for either format at this point.

Just because something is patented doesn't necessarily mean that it's possible! Nonetheless, alleviating the consumer's need to choose a format is obviously a good marketing strategy.

I doubt that the discs would be able to command much of a price premium, because most buyers would want only one of the formats anyway. The big savings would be for the manufacturers and retailers who wouldn't need to make, ship, and stock three times as many discs.

It gets around the provision that prohibits dual format players in the licenses to the CE companies nicely though.

                Well, $18 + $25 + $35 = $78, so $78, right?
