Hmmm ... I think they may have made a mistake with Utah and AWOLNATION, which is a Los Angeles group which I had never heard of till I looked them up. The lead singer Aaron Bruno was born and raised in Los Angeles. I'm a Utah native and I think I would have heard of them if they were here. Perhaps some member or members are from Utah?John

R.E.M. were Georgia lads, I believe (it's certainly where they coalesced as a band) and Rush is Canadian, not from Delaware. Unless this is a map to tell us the most popular band or act in a state rather than a point of origin. Oh and Neil Young is Canadian too, not from Massachusetts.- Bottom

I've heard of less than 1/4 of those, including not knowing who Ginger Kwan is, listed for Alaska.
EDIT: found some clarification:
apparently, it's just artists that are "distinctive" for each area. Not from there, or even that they're the "favorite" of that state.
That Ginger Kwan lady is from Hong Kong. No idea why she's "distinctive" for Alaska. If anything, I'd identify Jewel from Alaska.

I should have added some explanation & details.......these are artists that are popular by region, not origin.
I may have recognized 10 of them..........maybe........- Bottom

But they added the twist that they are the artists most popular in that area that are much less popular in other areas. The article pointed out that otherwise, most of the country would have uniformly listed artists like Jay-Z, Beyonce, etc.

Helloooooo????!!!......There's a country above that one that has produced some of the World's finest artists. For example....I take issue with your inclusion of Neil Young on your U.S map. Hello????........Neil Young is from Canada dude???!!!. That sets off big 'U.S is the 'only place that exists' on the planet alarms for me.Dan Madden :T- Bottom

You are taking this way too personal.
BTW, it is not my chart.Originally posted by DanI take issue with your inclusion of Neil Young on your U.S map
I just posted it for what it is, a different perspective on what people are listening to.- Bottom

To be fair, I made the same mistake initially, though I appreciated the additional explanations that cleared it up for me. But we Canadians can, occasionally, get a bit touchy when there's an alleged hint of cultural imperialism from US quarters. Still, a full reading of the thread shows that that's not what is going on here.- Bottom

We Alaskans would take offense at people thinking a Hong Kong artist came from Alaska. Must be because charts often depict Alaska as being in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. :P

I should have put the LINK in my 1st post.
This quote from the article:
By comparing the relative ranks of different artists between different parts of the country, Lamere was able to assign each state a "distinctive" artist, significantly more popular inside the state than outside of it.- Bottom

Try being a New Zealander for a while Chris. I'd be surprised if 10% of Americans know where New Zealand is. This percentage will increase once word gets out that Elvis has been sighted here recently.
