    Oscar Peterson Recommendation

    Howdy,

I've always admired Oscar Peterson but don't have any knowledge of his specific works. However, I recently heard an NFR demo SACD of "You Look Good To Me" by his trio and was blown away by it.

So can any seasoned fans of his recommend a few must have CD and/or SACD to a newbie?

    TIA,
    Hedwig

I don't know too much on the recording side, but my Parents have a Disklavier grand piano and they have a bunch of Oscar Peterson Disklavier recordings. There is absolutely nothing like it. It is literally the exact same as Oscar himself playing their piano.. So I can definately appreciate Oscar..

Is the SACD you list available mainstream?

    Cheers,

    Stuart

Cool...I'll google that is check it out.

The disc I heard is a Not For Resale demo that was used in the Hong Kong High-End Audio Video Show 2010. The credits does say Verve Records: We Get Requests so that's a "duh moment" for me.

Off the top of my head, try these:

OSCAR PETERSON TRIO - NIGHT TRAIN

OSCAR PETERSON TRIO - + ONE

SONNY STITT - STITT SITS IN WITH OSCAR PETERSON

BEN WEBSTER - BEN WEBSTER MEETS OSCAR PETERSON

When it comes to Oscar, it’s hard to find anything not worth having in your library, IMHO.

One interesting artifact is the session he did with Marian McPartland on the NPR series ‘Piano Jazz'. It is probably available on line if you do a search. It gives a wonderful insight to the man himself, along with some V nice performances.

Thx for these titles! Will check them out. For something more mainstrain, is his West Side Story good? Same thing with Louis Armstrong Sits In With...?

Oscar is straight ahead Jazz. He never did much in a ‘commercial’ style that I am aware of.

The WSS is just what it says it is. It’s his transcription of the original which was contemporary Jazz & is true to the form.

Night Train is basically his tribute to Duke Ellington (i.e. Take the E Train). This is one of my personal favorites that I highly recommend.

AFA the Louis Armstrong, if you like King Lou, you will like this one.

                    Enjoy!
