What is bass and what is boominess? What is the difference of them?Saying that bass is low frequency tells almost nothing to me,but I doubt that it is explainable.

Boominess is when a low-frequency sound (bass) is too loud compared to other frequencies, emphasizes certain specific frequencies at the expense of others or is too extended in time (entirely or only at certain frequencies), all by comparison to the original sound. This is usually most noticeable at upper bass frequencies.

"Boominess" is also often used to describe a sound effect that is produced when bass frequencies are just thrown out there in an uncontrolled manner, resonating and echoing in a cavity. "Boomy" bass will sound loud and obnoxious, like a big echo. In contrast, good SOLID bass will sound tight, controlled, and resonate in your chest.

A good subwoofer will produce bass that you can FEEL, pressuring and moving the air, no matter how low it goes, even at quiet volumes. At maximum volumes, the sound will sound LOUD, but you can still hear that it's tight and in control, shaking your body. An imperfect subwoofer might, at high volumes, produce bass that makes your ears hurt instead. Like a "BLLLAAAAHHHHHHHH" on a steady tone, (said with a raspy voice) instead of, "Bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....." (like the sound comes from the chest of Pavarotti)

Boomy to me is simply that "one note wonder" sound; an ambiguous, boxy-sounding "thud" representing all/most bass notes as opposed to clearly defined notes/sounds.
There are some things which are impossible to know, but it is impossible to know which things these are. :scratchhead:

                Where is my "mid" bass?
                by MDJones
                Hello all!

My sonosub is complete, and I've had enough time to critically listen to the system. Put simply, the sonosub is incredibly powerful below 60 Hz. Every explosion, thump, etc. is room-pressurizing and makes every movie more realistic. However, I have a problem that I'm not...

Bass reflex bass bin, advice wanted re acoustic lining
                by dstmbgh
I have a pair of original NHT Superzeros and I'm building a single bass bin to accompany them for a more full range music only setup. I say bass bin and not subwoofer because the Superzeros have little to no real bass (see http://www.stereophile.com/content/n...r-measurements), so the bass bin will...

                Hi all

I registered here to share my results with existing builders and future builders. The Statement 2s are great. Thanks to Jim and Curt for making this design available. Excellent results.

My build is fairly close to the build plan. The only deviations were adding an additional...
