    Newbie needs an answer

I built the statement monitors and really enjoy the sound. However, my woofer is making a thwack sound. Could it be bottoming out? What are some possible causes? resolutions?

Sorry if this seems too newbie.

Are both of your speakers making the sound, or just one of them? What amp are you using to drive the speakers? Do you hear it all the time or just when playing certain pieces of music (if if then, which music and parts)? Can you post pictures of the crossovers so we can take a look at them?

Could I have something wrong in the crossover?

I have balanced the levels between the two in my preamp with help of my db meter and they ROCK! Still deciding on which veneer to go with.

My thanks to the designers and a few people who were extremely patient with my dumb questions. ;x(
Did you ever fix this problem?

I did fix the 3db problem.

One speaker is making the sound. I am using a Yamaha Rx-495a receiver. Bass heavy music at moderate volume makes it happen.

I will post the pictures when I get home.

        Thanks for the fast response.

What was causing the 3dB problem originally?

Try swapping the speakers. Disconnect them and put the right speaker on the left channel, and the left speaker on the right channel. Does the noise always stay with the same speaker, or does it stay on the same receiver channel?

I double checked my crossover and rewired it and then everything was good.

I will do all the checks at home tonight.

Always possible to bottom it - though somewhat odd that it is only 1 speaker. Set your speakers to small and then repeat. If it goes away, then you may have your answer.

              How loud is it?

It could be that you got some debris stuck around the phase plug. Try gently pushing on the cone and see if you hear some scratching sound.

My speakers were set to large. I reset them and it still happens. I can only guess that it's my crossover. Gonna check it again.

Anyone have a pre-built crossover for these?

                Thanks for the responses.

If you can swap sides with the speaker that "clunks" and the noise follows the speaker, I suspect the RS180 needs replaced. If you really want to prove it, switch drivers between cabinets.

The good news is, the RS line has a 5 year warranty.
