    Laminate cutting shears

Just a little experiential post here, but I bought some laminate cutting shears from Lowes to cut some WilsonArt laminate I am using on a sub project. I'd heard good things about laminate shears, but I must have bought the wrong brand. They suck. The old score'n'snap method with a carpet knife is much better and less waste. $30 tool is going back to Lowes.

Laminate is sold in different thicknesses.

This was the standard thickness wilsonart, just with a gloss finish. Maybe a smidge thicker than the Formica I've used before, but easily rolled into a 1-1.5' diamater roll for a 4x8 sheet.

The latest issue of ShopNotes reference's tin snips to gnaw (not close completely) through oddball shaped pieces of laminate.

Seems like it might work on the post forming thickness.

They give a good edge when I go pretty slow, but it chips out when I start cutting at a reasonable speed. It's also awkward to use when cutting through a large panel, but that would be the same for any similar style cutting tool. It probably would work better on post forming material. I need to price that stuff out next time I'm at the distributor, it'd help out with the visibility of the edges.

BTW, you were right about the RS subs being beefy - picked up an RS12HF for a test project and was REALLY surprised what you can get for $100 on sale these days.

They're very very impressive for $100. They'd even be impressive at $150 or maybe a little more. Nice drivers, the build quality is great. Praxis gets here next week, might take me a bit to get it running, but should have T/S parameters measured on mine pretty soon.
