    Cabinet Questions

I'm getting started on my first pair of speakers, I've decided to go with the Kit281s. The instructions specify MDF or greater. After reading thru a few posts and some reviews on other web sites, I have found references to birch being a good wood if not using MDF. The main question I have is are denser woods preferred? I've got access to 3/4" oak and I'm curious if most use MDF to keep costs way down or if there are more serious considerations in choosing the type of wood.

The next question deals with putting everything together. Are all of the cabinet pieces glued, nailed, screwed? What methods did you use to put the cabinet together. Thanks for the help,

Solid wood is a no-no, unless it's just being used for window dressing added to the outside of an enclosure.

Plywood, and specifically void free plywood such as Baltic Birch 13 ply 3/4" is what you can substitute.

Most use MDF because of cost. You'll want to cover the enclosure with laminate, veneer or similar. Even painted, MDF is an excellent substrate. The only downside is weight, which really isn't a bad thing for speakers, as the plywood is lighter.

As for construction, butt joints and wood glue are the easiest and are more than strong enough for a speaker enclosure. Some folks just glue and clamps, others use screws or nails (a pneumatic brad nailer). If you use screws, make sure to pre-drill.
