Only scored 9912 @ 200/500 with detonator drivers.

Guys, any idea why Neverwinter NIghts and Red Alert 2 won't run on my machine? Is there some setting I can make so the computer won't stretch the image on non widescreen games? I don't play that long so I'm not worried about the burn it. Besides that, I don't know why those games don't run. TIA.

      Donovan:

Yes, you can control how the video card deals with non-native resolutions. I do this myself as I can't stand a stretched image. Unfortunately the option is somewhat hidden. But here is the procedure.

Get to the GeForce 4200 tab under Display Properties - Settings - Advanced. On the little side window that pops out, choose nView Display Mode. Then press the Device Settings>> button and choose the Screen Adjustment option. You want to choose the Use Centered Output radio button. When this is selected, if any programs runs at a res other than the native res of your panel, it will be shown in its proper res in the middle of your screen.

Donovan, I don't have those 2 games so i'm not quite sure what problems you may be experiencing. Is it that they won't load, or is it that they are just slow?

For non stretched images, what Jeff said

Thanks Jeff, worked like a charm!

Bing, I'm reinstalling those games tonight, so I'll know if Jeff's suggestion worked. But the games usually crash at the point where the resolution is changed. Ugh, hope this is resolved because the new expansion pack comes out tomorrow.

The DeLL Community is really getting raged over the Screen Burn.
That thread is now 15 pages long!

Looks like DeLL dropped the 5400RPM 40HD and replaced it with a 4200RPM model..

Trev, did you ever get the screen burn looked at?

I want to know how the on site service is and what's the name of the tech.

              That is a bummer man...

                Not yet Bing!
I may give DeLL a call next week.
According to the DeLL Forum,,Those that did
get there's fixed are experiencing it on the new screens
                that were replaced.
I am waiting until DeLL has made an official announcement on what they are going to do.
Apperently they are looking into it.

Here is a real good example of the BURN IN!!

OK, here's an appeal to all 8500 owners out there. I had brought this up with Bing before in email. I can't decided if there is a problem or not. Do any of you 8500 owners notice a drop in screen brightness at the sides when looking at the screen dead-on? I notice this, and it seems more prominent on the right than the left.

I don't know how to quantify the severity. We're not talking black/white differences here. Yet, looking at this page now, the grey background where the Current Dae/Time is definitely a shade darker on the right than the left (my IE window takes up half the screen, with the left side in the middle and the right at the right edge of the screen.

This bothers me only because I seem to have trouble reading things when text goes right to the edge. I think it is just the drop in Contrast.

Is this normal? Are you guys seeing this as well? I wouldn't expect brightness differences across the screen when viewing it head on - obviously I expect it to drop as I move around.

I'm just trying to decide if I should have Dell look at this or not.

Wow, that is a serious drag Trev.... I seen on thr Dell forum where one person was thinking he was lucky with out any problems and then all of a sudden the screen buren appeared. Tjis better not happen with me I tell you :bash: I don't know what to say. It really is to bad Dell shipped these i8500 with all these known problems...

Jeff, looking at this page full screen on my i8500, it looks pretty even across, however if I move my head slightly to the left or right the edges of the screen tends to darken slightly. However I don't appear to NOT be able to read the text as it's still in focus and has good contrast.

Bing,,Ididn't know that you could move your head that way without detaching it!!

                      Ha!Ha!

                      Jeff!!,
My contrast seems to be even all across,, no points seem to be brighter than others or dimmer.
Everything seems to normal in that respect.

Maybe start up a thread on the DeLL Forum..

From the Dell support forums, to identify what screen you have. Apparently only Samsung screens suffer from burn-in.

                        1) go to dell's page
                        2) login into your customer account
                        3) after having entered your account, go to Service and Support section ( the link is located on top of the page )
                        4) in the support page, click on Online Technical Support ( the link is located in the middle of the page )
                        5) if you have more than one system ordered, select the right system from "Manage my systems"
                        6) Click on the "Configuration" link
                        7) at this point, dell tries to install an applet that checks your current computer configuration. Select "No, I do not agree"
                        8) After this , you should see a screen having "LIMITED WARRANTY AND SERVICE CONTRACT" on top
                        9) go to the "System as shipped new" link
                        10) find the part for the display. In my case, it was the 3rd beginning from the top and it listed 1 U0674 Liquid Crystal Display, WUXGA, NO-SPWG, 15.4, SHARP . By analogy, I suppose that if you have a Samsung display, it will list that name.
My screen is a Sharp, so I guess I won't have any problems. Do you have a Sharp as well Bing??

The brightness thing was ticking me off, so now I run the window in the centre of the screen. Compromise I guess, but oh well. I don't think anything is wrong with it, I think I'm just sensitive to it.

As a side note, when I used the method above to check my system configuration, all the Warranty info said OUT OF WARRANTY. This was for both of our systems - the 5100 and 8500. Just wondering if you guys see the same? Maybe it is talking about something different, cuz I know I paid for the 3 yr CompleteCare plan!!

                            Hey Guys...

Wassa matter Trev, you can't move your head in those directions? :rollhead: :spin:

Using those directions Jeff, my screen is a Sharp as well.

I too got the out of warranty thing, maybe it's because we cancel out and don't allow it to install the applet?

Darn it hey Trev? You didn't like the desk top Samsung LCD monitor and in the end Dell stiffs you with one... Trev, I hope you get yours sorted out, you are way too patient with it. I don't think I would have displayed the same amount of tolerence as you have.

Jeff, either you are REALLY anal to the point of constant clench, or you may have a faulty screen. I would hate to be your real estate sales man :alol:

I dunno, I know I'm anal. But then again, if I have difficulty reading it, then maybe its not just that. Wish there was another 8500 in town so I could see for sure. For now I have compromised...though I don't like doing that.

I checked out mine,,but get no DATA.
The only option I have is to take the screen apart and check the installed label.
However, I am pretty sure that mine is a Samsung.

Maybe the Sharps have the problem that Jeff is experiencing.
Not sure which would be worse?

However, I am pretty sure that mine is a Samsung.

Maybe the Sharps have the problem that Jeff is experiencing.

*Currently using the Dell drivers, as I thought I was using the Detonators.

About the modded drivers here: http://www.geocities.com/madtoast/

I followed the procedures as described on the website. However, the driver will not install correctly even though it says it installed and reboot. After login, the computer is still in VGA mode. This is what I did:

                                      1. Unistalled the Dell drivers and rebooted
                                      2. Unzipped the 44.03 drivers to HD and copied modded INFs over the old INFs and the copied the second necessary file as well
                                      3. Ran installation to no avail.

3a. Tried the "Have disk" method to similar end.

What am I doing wrong? I'm about to pull my hair out over this! Thanks again guys.

Sorry Donovan! Hopefully Bing or Jeff can guide you through that one.

                                        Just to update!
I called DeLL support today about my Screen Burn.
I asked the Tech to send me a copy of his documentation
                                        on this subject.
Here is basically what we discussed.

                                        Mr Schell Trevor,

This is in reference to the information I had to give
you regarding image retension issue you had with your samsung LCD.

Problem: Flat Panel LCDs May Exhibit Image Retension Similar to Monitor
                                        Burn-In
Flat Panel LCDs based on In Plane Switching (IPS)
                                        technology may exhibit image retention
Discussion: The appearance of this symptom closely resembles CRT phosphor
burn-in. It is due to the capacitive elements that exist in the pixel cells
                                        of all LCD panels.

The image retension is caused by allowing a static image to remain on the
screen for an excessive amount of time. The capacitive elements in the
pixels build up an electrical charge, preventing the liquid crystals from
returning to their off state, allowing a faint image to remain. The Windows
Login screen as a screen saver has been known to cause image retention
                                        problems.

Solution: Do not replace any hardware. The stuck image can be removed by
exercising the LCD pixels to bleed off the residual capacitive charge. This
can most easily be accomplished by using a random pattern screen saver to
changes the screen image repeatedly. The time required to clear the stuck
image can vary widely depending on the panel technology and the severity of
                                        the "stuck" image.

To prevent a stuck image from recurring, use the power management feature to
turn off the monitor or use a dynamically changing screen saver.

                                        with Regards,

                                        Keanu,
                                        Dell Hardware Support.

This was covered on the DeLL Forum thread discussing the screen burn.
However the guy would not listen to me..This doesn't work and when it is successful, it comes right back anyways.
I was suprised that the tech had never heard of the DeLL Forum.
I know more about the Screen Burn problem than what the Tech does just from reading the thread.
Anyways,,I ran the screen saver for about three hours and still can see my icons and task bar shadow on a light background.
I will call back tommorrow to inform him it didn't work , just like I told him it wouldn't in the first place.

Sorry Donovan, I had a look and it seems simple enough. Maybe Jeff could help out here as he is running the Detonator drivers. I'm running the Dell drivers.

Trev, what a load of crap... He gives you a boilerplate response to what the problem is and then provides a solution that does not fix it at all, and a rather inconveient one at that. I would demand the correct fix or they will get the whole system back for a refund and it wouldn't come through the mail, I'll call on site tech support and they can come pick it up.

Geezzz..... that pisses me off, thats like me getting a new car and saying there is something wrong with the windshield, it tough to see out of it because it all crazed and distorted.. Tech supports tells me to roll down my side window and stick my head out the side to drive... What a bunch of bastards!

That is odd, Donovan. Did you remove the old driver first? I seem to remember something about nVidia drivers acting weird if the old driver isn't removed first. I think the tool was called DetonatorDestroyer or something.

Also, did you be sure not to install via the nVidia setup routine, but rather manually through Device Manager?

I will hunt down my instructions for installing and then post them for ya.

Trev, that absolutely SUCKS. That is one reason I am dreading calling tech support. If I had more faith, I would've called them already. There is NO excuse for the lack of knowledge displayed by 'KEANU', though maybe his name is a tip-off. Seriously though, get serious and get it sorted, don't stand for that crap!!

Keep calling and document all their names etc. I returned a port replicator and didn't do what I wanted and it took months to get the credit back. I was told to ship it back to an address they provided only to later learn that it was the wrong address and they'd have to try and find the item...they actually tried to blame me for sending it to the wrong address! Luckily I'd requested a tracking number when I shipped it back so I knew it had been delivered. Anyway my point is keep calling and if you need to ask to speak to their supervisor.

Here is the latest posted from the Moderator at the DeLL Forum.

Thank you all for your feedback. A certain amount of residual image is considered acceptable with this or any LCD technology. Running a screen saver to exercise the pixels should remedy the issue. If you are experiencing excessive residual image problems and must run a screen saver often for long periods of time or the screen saver doesn't seem to help, the display could be defective. Acceptible my ass, I have never seen that on a LCD display and you shouldn't be expected to live with it or run screen savers for 8 hours... Hello..... I mean a person may actually want to use the notebook?!?!?!?

I love my Dell, but I'm begining to think they really arn't all that when it comes to service and feature set for the price. Why so slow to offer a DVD+R burner as an upgrade and where the heck is the 5600FX or Radeon 9600 Video cards??

                                                    Bing,,
FS has a nice Toshiba with the 5600FX
Plus a coated antiglare screen like you see on RPTV..
Sure is a different beast. $3499 as well.

However, nothing beats our WUXGA screens..

Here is the newest reponse from DeLL

                                                      Mr. Schell Trevor,

I will speak to my senior technician regarding your issue and for this I
would need of time to get some clarification on this. Hence continue running
the screen saver for a long time as of now.

                                                      Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

                                                      Regards
                                                      Dell Hardware Support.

What's funny about this , is that the screen saver does tone it down abit after running it for 24 hours. However, when you use your computer again, the burn images come right back again.
                                                      Silly Silly direction.

Trev, I guess them looking into it is promising....

I seen the new Toshiba at FS and I would have to say it is a nice unit for the price. It has the Geforce 5600 FX and a DVD-RW drive and 60GB HD. I would have seriously considered this if it was available at the time.

The glossy screen looks impressive at first until you work with it. The reflections given off of it are very distracting. I like the matt finished screens of most typical LCD instead.

Yo know I think the Dell WUXGA screen is nicer. I actually got into a discussion about these two units on the dell Forums. It's seems most of the people that didn't own the WUXGA Dell were saying the Toshibi was better. In my eyes the Toshiba was nice but not as crisp or clear as the dell.

Futureshop also have a E-Machines Widescreen notebook. It is a 2200XP Athlon with a 15.4 WXGA screen. When I was looking at it this young pup came up and asked me what I thought of it. I told him it was nice and then asked what he thought of it... "awesome, awesome, awesome..." was what he said. I left it at that cause if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all... Actually it was not bad for $1900 bucks. The WXGA (1280x800) was pretty coarse looking coming from WUXGA. I hate to sound like a snob, but man this Dell's WUXGA screen really spoils you for anything else.

I have to say I certainly enjoy using this i8500 on battery and wireless. It has added another dimemsion to my computing experience as i just use it anywhere and anytime.

Trev, I was considering that Blue Tooth mouse you had to use with the i8500. What exactly was the problem with it for you? How long did you find the batteries last? Does it have a switch on the mouse to turn it on or off?

You got it Bing, the WUXGA is the star of the 8500. I can't imagine being without it. Even with the one issue I have, it is still tops. I have found a workaround that I can live with, and I know I'm covered for three years so if it gets worse or anything, I have options.

I think already the Dell has paid for itself for me. The freedom to do my computing wherever I like is wonderful. I don't worry too much about what is new now, because I knew that would happen. Just as you could buy a new Toshiba now, but a new Dell is probably right around the corner. It never ends.

I agree with you guys 110 % on the WUGXA screen.
Everything else looks too large and grainy in comparison.
It's like going from 1080i HD to 480i in comparison to image quality and text.

Bing,,I agree on the Toshiba. After seeing it several times it is rather annoying to work with.
Heh! Heh! I was going to try and peel that Nvidia label off, however it seemed like it was going to tear.

Jeff,,No matter what comes out new,,It won't be as worthy as the i8500.
Don't forget! We can upgrade these guys too!
Like a 2.6 Ghz processor would be nice down the road.

Bing,,The Blue Tooth mouse was sticking, which is why I took it back.
Once using it, it was smooth to scroll back and forth unlike the wireless MS mouse I had. However, when you stop for a bit , there is a slight hesitiation to get it going again...sometimes up to a couple of seconds..
I did like that!! So she hit the highway!
                                                            I don't recommend it.
The Targus wireless mouse with the USB IR works great.
Yup,,I also love the wireless portability the i8500 brings to the table.
                                                            Can't be beat.

Now!!,,Just to see what direction they take on the Screen Burn .
I they do nothing, I will not loose sleep.
I only see it when I shut down the computer, so it no biggy,
However, maybe down the road it would get worse!, Who knows for sure.
If it is indeed a defect, I would expect it to be fixed.
In home service too ! for that matter.

I really want something BlueTooth so I don't have to plug anything in. Just turn it on and shazam! Right now my old MS Explorer works well, when required.

It would still be a screamer, however I would like to see the 5600FX or the ATI9600 mobile soon. Ah what the heck, I would take tha Quadro just because it is a professional card :P

Trev, I didn't think you liked that snap on stuff.. Didn't you say something about putiing on something only to have it break off :blah: ? That said I can't say I care for any of the snap on patterns as I like the stock silver finish. Now if Dell made a glossy Carbon fiber we would be talking :yeah:

Andrew, is the GC upgrade listed on Dell's site yet? Most times I find the upgrade hardware on the US site, but not the CA site. I don't think we can but from the US site, even though the customer support links us to the US site when looking for parts.

I could paint it if the carbon fiber doesn't work out. And I could always snap it on when travling with the i8500. I only hope it doesn't leave marks on the original top skin.

When you seen the burl wood one how is the finish of it? Is it glossy or matt? Did it add a lot of thickness to the notebook?
