    Unreal II

I'll be short and sweet about this one.

Everyone knows about the great graphics engine, the large levels and detail, and the amazing weapons effects.

But what made Unreal II a very satisfying experience for me was the highly story driven plot and memorable characters, who's details unfold throughout the course of the game. Not since Wing Commander III have I been as pulled into unexpected story twists and drama, and this without any "live" actors in Unreal II.

I took a few screen shots, but static screen shots don't really do Unreal II justice. There's plenty on the web, anyway, and many of you probably wouldn't want to try to view 1280X1024 shots over the web anyway. The polygon detail and textures fully justify playing it at that resolution, if you have the hardware. I'd say minimum would be a 1 GHz Athlon, 512 MB of ram, with a "low end" card like a Radeon 9000 Pro, run at lower resolutions. Up the processor power to a 1.8 GHz Athlon with 512 MB, and 1024X768 is OK. For 1280X1024, a Ti4200 is adequate, though I'm sure a Radeon 9700 would be better.

It was a blast, which did leave me hoping for a sequel continuing the story.

It sure is pretty. I must say, however, yours is the first really enthusiastic review I've read. The general consensus is that it's pretty as all hell to look at but uninspired gameplay makes it a bore real quick.

Then again, a lot of people said the same things about the first Unreal.

I think I'll wait until it hits the clearance bin but your review has given me enough hope to want it again.

      Jon-

That looks just like my type of game. Personally, I like doing the games where you have a personal objective to reach, more so than team gaming or online shootouts. However, it will have to wait until my theater's done, as I've got to devote my spare time to that for a while. otherwise, it will never be built.

I really appreciate your point of view on the time involved! If I hadn't been laid up with the back thing, I certainly wouldn't have had time for this- at least, not time that I wouldn't have felt a skosh guilty about.

Now, if I don't get back to work and finish up some of the other projects I've started, I'll never hear the end of it from ThomasW if he hears about another computer game from me!
