Video tearing, hesitation problems with ATI 8500

    Hi!,,

I am disappointed at the performance of my ATI 8500 64 meg card.
The reason is that I expereince Video tearing when running graphic demo scenes.

Also purchased the video game Dungeon Seige. While rotating in a 360 dgree spiral, I expereince hic-cups in the video,,like a slight pause.

The system is an Athlon 1700+ processor.
Is the reasons for this performance directly related to my video card or is it possibly the computer.?

    Thanks for any help.

Trev, I would think it is definitely the Video card. Most times this si a driver or set-up issue.

Go to Rage3D.com and maybe see if you can find some leaked drivers.

There are some new Via 4-1 drivers for your Mobo, make sure you update those, I posted that a while back.

See if there is a patch for the game Dungeon Seige at the game site.

If all those are taken care of and it still has problems, you may need to try the following things.....

Turn on or of V-sync enabled under the ATI set-up and see if that makes a difference. Usually V-sync enabled will reduce tearing however at the expense of frame rate. Make sure you monitor is set to the highest refresh rate that is available for the resolution your running. If frame rate exceeds sync rate tearing can occur. Also ensure 32 bit Z buffer is selected.

Maybe check your bios and ensure AGP 4x is enabled. You may have to enable or disable sideband addressing as well to see if that helps. Turn off Video bios caching if it is enabled. last i remember I set your AGP aperature to 256, maybe try adjsuting it through the ranges to see if it may solve the problems. I would'nt think this would be an issue as you have enough memory.

Turn off any antialisisng or smooth vision /True form as that eats a lot of GPU power.

You may need to disable complex shadowing in the game console it's self, or disable other functions that may be a pig on GPU cycles.

Maybe post your problems on the Rage Forum for there will be a lot more experiance there related to the ATI than I know personally.

Read this post Seems it can be an inherant problem with the 8500's.

You have more than enough power with your system, unless you are running resolutions higher than 1600x1200, I tend to think it's drivers or set-up related.

I though you sold this card?

      Thanks Bing!,

Iwill follow your instructions to see if I can get it going.

I have sold the Radeon 8500 to a co-worker,,actually we are making a trade. I get his P 700mhz box which will go to the office at work. In exchange he gets the Radeon 8500.
Not sure what card to pick up..likely the G4 from Leadtek.

So your just playing with it in your system?

The Leadtek is one heck of a card, you'll be happy with it.

Gee Trev, I would have just called Bing to come over to dinner and then while he was there, say oh Bing, wondered if you knew anything about this vid card? Well, if you don't, it's ok, but hey, while your here!
