    Geforce 4 Just Out.

Kyle at Hard OCP takes a look at Nvidia's Geforce 4 Read it Here

Tom looks at it as well Read it Here

It looks to be very fast out of the gate and really walks away in some benches. I have not been able to estabilsh if it supports Dierect X 9 at this point. It will be interesting to see how ATi's new card will compare.

    Drool!!!

When is the new ATI card due? What name is it going by?

When purchasing video cards I tend to stay 6 to 10 months behind the curve. That gives developers time to get some software on store shelves that actually takes advantage of the new hardware.

Oh, and the price always drops in that time.

Mid to late february the 128 meg Radeon 8500 will be out.

The new ATI chip to be released is R300, sometime mid May- June... Prototypes have been sent out already. Reality of it is probally more August. It does support direct X 9.0

G3 is good enough for me, at least for now. But it's always nice to see things move ahead. By the time I want one, it may be old technology, but dang good old technology

nVidia is getting to be a little too much a marketing driven organization for my personal tastes. The top Geforce 4 models do represent the pinacle of current 3D performance. The midrange is a pretty nice board, with some enhancements to the visual engine for DVD- but it's really a "4". The bottom end is defnitiely more in the order of a re-badged Geforce 2MX. None of the zoot 3D features of the "real" 4 are implemented in hardware. Disappointing, if predictable.

            Regards,

            Jon

I agree Jon, while the GF4 may be blazingly fast, what is the real requirements for it at this point other than bragging rights?

What am I saying :?: I still have to have it

Seriously, I have not ran a game program yet that has brought my 1400mhz/GF3 system to it's knees. Thats at 1600x1200 32 bit color, everything enabled. Sure the GF4 can run faster than the GF3 with Antialiasing enabled, however at 1600x1200, AA really doesn't need to be enabled. I certainly don't see a marked difference during gaming at that high resolution. Maybe if I took still captures of the games and did a side by side comaprision, however negligable.

On the other hand, while it may not have brought a lot of graphical innovation, it does bring with it a dual display that is more like the Matrox dual head display. Matrox does the best dual display tv output functionality in my opinion, and this is a feature not previously found on GF3's.

So in the end it may not be required, but that doesn't stop me from coveting it any less

                Hey Bing,

That's what those folks are couting on, that we'll "just have to have it" anyway! I did pop for a GeForce 3 Ti 200 for my main gaming rig, but nothing I've been running has given my any problems with that card and "only" an Athlon 1 GHz.

Of course, that may change if I ever have time to get into Aqua Nox and IL-2 Surmovik, which I got for Christmas. As long as I stay too busy building speakers, I probably won't notice if my graphics card is a "little" long in the tooth.

Now, I really wish the new maxed out 4 had the new visual engine in it. Then maybe I could work up some justification based on DVD playback. :B
