I agree, Exact Audio Copy with FLAC as the compression utility. Also make sure to get the AccurateRip plugin for Exact Audio Copy, so you know you're getting a perfect rip from your CD/DVD drive.

      Exact Audio Copy:

      FLAC:
A free, open source codec for lossless audio compression and decompression

      AccurateRip:

Installation is pretty easy, hardest part is setting up FLAC for use with Exact Audio Copy. If I can find the settings again for it, I'll post them up, but I switched back to LAME for my mp3 player since I wanted more space and the quality difference was minor compared to FLAC (at least for mp3/headphone listening).

        iTunes! (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/)
It is the easiest (and IMO best) program of them all, free, has a huge user base, and Apple Lossless is, well, lossless. Check in the Preferences and change the format to Lossless (I think it defaults to AAC).

Yeah, but then you are limited to using itunes and an ipod...

Lots of things use flac and even more use mp3 (which Lame is the best)...

If ripping, and you don't want to get locked into the Apple thing, FLAC (a Free Lossless Audeo Codec) is an alternative, its open source, but development has been very slow lately. LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder (its also open source), and MP3 is not lossless. If you want a lossless backup of a CD, burn it.

After a lot of listening, I gave up on the other codecs (for various reasons) and re-ripped everything in Apple lossless. It might restrict you to iTunes, but so what? - iTunes is IMO one of the best jukebox applications out there, and its free. Any computer with Quicktime can play the files, and they're compatible with devices like Squeezebox, and Roku too.
