    Interesting Comparison

I received 3 screen samples today from http://www.carada.com.

Classic white, Brilliant white, and high contrast grey.

Interesting comparison with gain of 1.0, 1.4, and .8 respectively.

I thought I had pretty good blacks. But when I saw the image on the high contrast grey, I found out in fact there was a substantial difference in blacks on the grey screen sample. The only thing I don't care for is what it does for whites. Whites are darker like the other colors, and of course, that's not necessarily a good thing. Well, colors are a bit darker as well. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing always. In fact, it can add some realism.

Anyway, David Carada is a nice guy to work with, I'll let you all know how the final screen turns out.

I'd see if you can get a silver sample from someone and see how you like that. I find that the silver still gives you that boost in black levels but doesn't dull white as much as grey does.

I'll be curious to see what you think when you get a completed screen.

Which size and aspect ratio are you going for?

My own experience has been that using a screen with gain gives the appearance of higher black levels, but the net contrast is the same, and they actually reject off axis light bettter. Sometimes they work very well as regards subjective contrast with just a little bias lighting behind the screen. This "anchors" the eyeball subjectively, when the onscreen levels are varying a lot.

        Regards,

        Jon

Andrew, I am likely buying a screen from David at Carada. I think I will get by ok without silver. His prices are good and he's custom sizing it for my wall.

Jon, I am going for a 4:3 screen of 105" diagonal. I am limited to 83" in width at my current home. 87" frame and all. There's not much chance that will change well into the future.

for now, the 4:3 projector stays. Later if I decide 16:9 is for me with a different projector, I can always mask it off for 16:9. But odds are I will still want a dual mode projector. I watch quite a bit of TV, so why not maximize my enjoyment of all formats.

Truthfully, I am not sure I would want a screen much bigger than this image even for widescreen unless I had more front to back room. I think it's a nice size anyway.

I use a grey screen and agree that when you compare them side by side with a higher gain screen the whites can look dull. However, once you a full screen, and hence no way to make a comparison, the problems seems to go away.

For the some reason the same doesn't happen for me with black levels, which is why I went grey.
