    Sanyo Z1 for $1,195!!!

Hello...I saw the price came down on this unit and it's really got me thinking about it. I originally planned on heading more towards the Panny 300u, mainly because of reduced Screen Door Effect, but for the price difference $700 or so...I'm reconsidering!

Yeah, you really have to see these babies before you commit.

Agreed... try to audition a FP before you drop dough on it, especially with the digital ones. None of them are perfect. LCDs tend to have weak blacks and screen door effect, and DLP has the rainbow effect and motion artifacts, and some people are more sensitive then others to these things. Personally I like the DLP image better than LCD but the next guy who posts here could prefer LCD.

In short, try before you buy, preferably on the same type of screen you'll be using. Different screens can bring out or mask some of these artifacts. A gray screen like the Stewart Grayhawk with a good DLP or even LCD will look awesome.

The best overall image IMHO still comes from CRT, but they bring on their own issues: cost, light control and setup/maintenance for starters. In a couple years though I'll bet some digitals will meet or surpass CRT for picture quality at a fraction of the cost. Like computers, projector technology is advancing at an astounding rate.

Yea, it's finding a place nearby to audition them BOTH that is the problem. There may be a place down in Portland, OR that I can...but then it might be easier just buying both then returning the one I don't like!

I've got the screen picked out....no matter which one I go with....45x80 High Contrast Cinema Vision Da-Lite Perm Wall...1.1 gain, grey screen.

Something tells me I'll like the panny better based on what I've read and screen shots...but then the price is more...but I'll probably be thankful down the road for that.... This is killing me...luckily I'm in no hurry...but when my gear sells I'll have this hole burning in my pocket! :P

Thanks for your input fellas! 8)

Eric, be careful on buying and returning. Some places charge a restocking fee as much as 10% of the price tag.

Next guy here. Actually, I don't prefer LCD. I think no one would argue DLP is inherently a better picture. Problem is I am bugged by rainbows, and more importantly, couldn't afford a DLP bright enough for use in my house.

That said, Kevin, you should see what the DVI input has done for the PLV70. I know you thought it was decent before, but this really is a new level.

I'm now leaning towards the Z1 due to it's "lens shift" feature cause I need to clear my front soffit...with the Panny 300u I'd have to have the thing installed 2' from the ceiling! 8O But it's the price difference too....oh, the pain and joy of this!

I've seen a demo of the Z1, alongside a PLV70 and a MArantz S2. (The S2 was obviously the clearly superior machine.)

But anyway, the Z1 was pretty nice. I have the 70 clone at home, and looking at the Z1, I was surprised the picture was as close to the quality of mine as it was. The screen area was smaller a this demo (1/4 the area), but still a very nice watchable image. Certainly a far better value than a similarly priced RPTV.

I think on your size screen, you'd be pretty pleased with it. I ahve never seen the Panny.

Brandon, yea given I'll be going with a 45x80 screen...first row at 10' and the word on the street is the screen door is not readily apparent at 1.5 times screen width...80x1.5 = 120/12" = 10'!!! Then I look pretty solid...heck for $1,200 it's a no brainer...and I too have read that many have compared this unit to one's 1,000's more but the differences "usually" don't make spending the money worth it...

                        Thanks for sharing....
