Just ordered a new screen for my projector

Back in 2007, I got my first projector and built a screen with some DIY material, following a recommendation I saw at another A/V forum (sorry, I do go to more than one ops: ). In any case, working with what I had, I made a 64" 16:9 screen and it has served me well for this past decade. It still looks great, but with my new (last year) projector, especially with its 3D ability, I've wanted to go bigger--but not spend a lot of money.

Did a quick search on Amazon and found cheap screens for very little money--mostly geared to temporary/outdoor use; something only made practical in the last few years with much brighter projectors, I presume (these did not exist 10 years ago--or at least were not widely advertised). I ordered the biggest one I can fit into my room re: wall space and seating distance. Still not large by projection standards (84" 16:9), it will be a rather big step up. For 30$, I figure I can't lose. I can build a permanent frame for about the same price. If it looks like crap, I'm out 60$. If it is too big for the space (it fits, but may seem overwhelming in use), I can easily go back (or get something in-between). If it looks as good as what I have now, but bigger, it'll stay.

I know it won't look as good as better screen material--and I'd be willing to go with something in the 200-400$ range. But the best recommended screens in that price range (used to be double the price 10 years ago for the same quality--which is why I built my own in the first place) are all 92" or bigger--and that simply doesn't work in my current space. There are some dedicated 84" ones out there, but they are almost all above 400$. I think I'll try my cheap experiment first.

So, anyone go bigger on their screen, only to wish they'd stayed at the previous size? I expect few people would say yes, but, in a small space like mine (seating is 9' from screen, which makes 84" the max recommended size for THX viewing angle), perhaps not.

    Just curious.

First, I hope your new screen is working out for you- if you've bought and installed it.

There are screens at smaller sizes- I feel your pain, I have a nice 72" screen I'll be bringing out of storage to the new apartment soon- it's not a high gain material, but rather one designed for color fidelity at a wide viewing angle. I don't remember the brand, it was an online purchase many years ago from a smaller company- hope they're still around.

It was a conscious decision to stay with that screen size, both due to the size of the new living room (which actually isn't all that bad, could handle a 100" screen) but also to optimize the brightness, in consideration of doing HDR via a projector.

It will be paired with a new Epson 5040UB, which supports HDR 10 and a wide color gamut with DCI-P3, so this should be a good match- the last time I was using it was with one of my CRT projectors. The projector directly supports 10 bits per channel, in order to get the HDR capability, but that also means that relatively to peak lumens (2500 to 3500 for this model) the average light output is reduced- smaller screen should help with that- we'll see.

Most existing projectors doing HDR struggle a bit because they simply can't put enough NITs on a large screen, compared to a 55" or 65" OLED panel. I've been collecting 4K HDR Blu-Rays over the last year, so I've got a few disks to try out- I have an OPPO 203 which is on loan to my GF until she passes (in the next 3-6 months) due to pancreatic cancer. It's not doing 4K in the old family room setup, she's just playing standard Blu-Rays, and DVD's, but it has the discrete audio output her old HT system needs, as it doesn't have advanced audio decoding built in and it does't support HDMI.

This is not the screen I have, but it is the closest conceptually in construction and design intent, and actually quite a bit cheaper (well, prices were higher back then...)

I just picked my screen up from storage to take to the apartment- it's a Carada- quick check shows it looks like they went out of business around the end of 2016. Too bad; it's a nicely made product. Recommendation for the one above stands...

If you can swing the budget, I highly recommend the Screen Innovations ALR screens. Looks like a tv off, rejects ambient light.

One of the first screens I've ever thought that makes a huge difference.

Went to their website- pretty amazing range of technologies on offer, and the ability to build and configure is intriguing. Smallest size is 80”, might work fine with what I have in mind for the future. I’ve been out of the loop for a while on a lot of things, due to the press of various issues at work and otherwise.

Definitely innovative, like the Casper mattress I just bought.

Thanks for the recommendation Kevin, I’ll definitely follow up!

I'll try to upload some pics when I get on the laptop, prod me if you don't see anything in the next few days.

Just finished a Sony laser short throw with their short throw black diamond. Only reflects light thrown at angles below the screen.

That's a pretty neat concept! Is that short throw Sony like the new Dell, sits right up at the front on the floor?

What's the model number of the Sony?

Well, I submitted a quote request for an 80" ALR type screen, gain of 1.4... I bet I'm going to need a defibrillator when I see the number... should be interesting!

I believe you're probably right- (haven't got it yet, but did find typical pricing on Crutchfield- Yikes!!)

This article, about a range of ALR type screens, is good reading.

It's a pretty crazy technology based on multiple layers some of which are proprietary. From what I understand it's kind of like watching a rear-projection TV in bright lights. When the lights are dimmer (even just say table lamps and such) you almost lose nothing in image quality.

Thanks mucho for that link. Haven't gotten a response on the quote request yet from my chosen local dealer.

Now, that price doesn't look bad at all, and the 80" version is "just" $2,310. Not budget, but not quite breathtakingly ludicrous, either. Something to give me pause for thought. The Video is pretty convincing... I've seen that problem even in dealers displaying front projection, with washed out blacks due to ambient lighting.

Yeah they seem to be a bit more competitive now that there are other companies offering similar screens, although the SI black diamond seems to be the best performer still. I didn't see the 80" version before, so yeah that's not horrible.

                                All right.

                                Black Diamond 1.4 145" 2.35:1 with Sony 1100

Only off picture I have is a video. But notice the entire room is lit and only the lighting from the back is reflecting. LED back lighting is a gimmick, but whatever.

On pics are not retouched, standard Bluray source.

                                Slate 1.4 150" with a Sony 675.

Short throw 120" with Sony VZ1000.

Projector threw a fan error after a few weeks and Sony is replacing it, so no action shots yet. But is looked awesome.

That's not a bad price with free shipping. The Black Diamonds are affixed to a wood substrate, so they do not come in a tube like most screens. Your 80" would arrive in about an 84" crate. Let me know if you don't get a reply. We get free shipping with two screens and think we can drop ship.

Wow. Now I feel I have to get off my lazy butt and put my paltry screen together.

Been far too busy in the past month to build the frame and attach the screen, then remove the old (very heavy) DIY one and put the new one in place. Grad school, kids, Xmas travel, work... However, I've got some free time coming up in a few weeks, so it should go up before the snow melts.

I'd love to go with made to order, high quality screen someday--but paying my school, and with one kid about to graduate high school--cheap DIY will have to last me a while longer. And, truthfully, my eyes are less discerning than my ears, so I'm fine with "decent looking", which I already have before I put up the bigger one. If it hadn't been so cheap, I wouldn't have bothered. Mostly, it's to see if it's worth spending more later on a big screen.

As for HDR and 4K in the main room, that's years away (my new(from last year) projector is a 5030, so only 1080p, and I'll stay with that until it dies, like I did with my 720p Sony for 9 years). The living room TV is likely to be 4K and HDR long before (my current TV is SDTV CRT--yikes!!!). I expect by the end of my current projector, 80"ish TVs will be affordable and I might forgo a projector altogether (the room can't handle more than 84" in any case).

Lotto win, though, and all bets are off.
