    Is my HDTV DOWNsampling?

I've got a Panasonic TH-37PX25 plasma HDTV. Physically, the screen has 1,024 × 720 pixels and can accept only 1080i and 480p/i from component inputs.

My cable receiver (Motorola DCT-5100) can output 1080i through component output. Is my TV DOWNsampling in image with 1080 lines to an image with 720 lines?

Is this TV displaying something less than the real deal?

Basically it's scaling the 1080I input to the native resolution of your plasma TV which is 720.

And 1024x720, not 1280x720 which would be a "real" HD resolution.
