    Star Wars 4-6 DVD news

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Fans can get a first look at the new Darth Vader costume from the 2005 Star Wars: Episode III prequel on the upcoming DVD collection of the original trilogy, Lucasfilm announced Monday.

The first three Star Wars films debut for the first time in digital format on Sept. 21.

The Darth Vader featurette promises an interview with creator George Lucas discussing how Jedi warrior Anakin Skywalker became the fearsome space villain.

It also will show behind-the-scenes footage of actors Hayden Christensen, who plays Anakin, and Ewan McGregor, who plays Obi-Wan Kenobi, engaged in the forthcoming film's climactic lightsabre duel.

"We're going to see the evolution of this character and go places with Darth Vader we've never gone before," said Jim Ward, a Lucasfilm marketer and DVD executive producer. "Our fans have been eagerly awaiting every morsel of Episode III as we divulge it. We're giving it to them piece by piece."

He said the DVD would hold back, however, on most of the details, which are being saved for the final instalment in the prequel trilogy, set for release in theatres on May 19, 2005.

Besides the three movies, subtitled A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the DVD collection also will include documentaries about the history of the laser-sword lightsabres, an exploration of how some of the famous alien creatures were inspired and created, and a playable Xbox videogame demo for the upcoming game Star Wars: Battlefront.

Just to beef that up a bit:

Speculation has been rampant about what will be included on the four-disc STAR WARS DVD box set and now LucasFilm has pulled back the curtain to reveal some of the details.

The highlight of the set is an original 2 1/2 hour documentary "Empire of Dreams: The Story of the Star Wars Trilogy," which features interviews with more than 40 members of the cast and crew and many others discussing the cultural impact STAR WARS has had.

Also included will be a 10-minute preview of EPISODE III that will curiously feature no footage from the new film. Instead expect to see conceptual drawings, behind-the-scenes footage, talking heads, etc. But LucasFilm did promise viewers the first look at Darth Vader in costume from the upcoming flick.
George Lucas, Carrie Fisher and Irvin Kershner are among those who will provide audio commentary for the films. Also included on the bonus disc include featurettes on "The Birth of the Lightsaber," "The Characters of Star Wars" and "The Force Is With Them: The Legacy of Star Wars," as well as original trailers and TV spots, an archive of exclusive making-of photos and an onscreen collection of posters and print campaign materials.

The STAR WARS DVD will be available on September 21st for a suggested retail price of $69.95.

The answer to that question is what will determine whether a lot of Star Wars fans bother with the DVD set or not. They can include a bazillion supplemental features including a Lucas commentary, but if the movies aren't what we saw in their initial release in commercial theaters, I, for one, will spend my money on something else.

I'm afraid the answer is going to be something along the lines of:

"George Lucas owns the Star Wars movies and, fans be damned, he can do anything he wants to with his intellectual property. What he chooses to do is tinker with CGI special effects that don't fit the look of the originals and "politically correct" changes to plot points to make the movies closer to what he'd have done with them if he had been making them for the first time today. The towering artistic achievements he's scored with Eps I & II should put to rest any concerns people have about the changes he's made to Eps 4, 5 and 6."

        :>)

Sorry, lost it for a moment there. Burke - you are so bad! :

As I said earlier, I'll be buying the set, but under protest - like THAT will do a lot of good, eh? I want the original version regardless of whether the SE's are included, but IIRC the originals aren't available any more.
We can only hope I'm incorrect on that, and that George will out of the goodness of his heart, include them in the offering.

Having said all that, I'm still looking forward to that 21st day in September!

Ok, I know this is a game, but I just finished it the other day on the easy level and must say, WOW this would be a great movie. It could really fill in the rest of the story and be the perfect Star Wars Episode 3.5. It provides (IMHO) essential information about how the Rebellion initially formed...
