Book to movie

After the thread about the hunger games I just wanted to ask, what book to movie adaptation you like the most?
I like The name of the rose and Perfume

As always, the screenplay wanders a bit but I believe that the essence of both stories is kept.

LOTR is an entirely different animal and like it a lot as well.

Being Mexican I had to also add El gallo de oro :P

I really liked the way they did Hunt for Red October. True to book, up until the final plot twist, where they did a different twist that worked well, and made it fun for the book readers whot hought we knew what was going to happen.

Chris, Hunt for Red October is one of my favorite movies of all time, but never read the book. You think you could explain that plot twist in a spoiler tag?

Well Hollywood always did a hatchet job on most Ernest Hemingway books, but, surprisingly, they really outdid themselves with The Old Man And The Sea. Much of Spencer Tracy's dialogue was lifted directly from the book and the story never veered off course. A rarity, but I was thankful because that classic novel is probably my favorite of all time.

I remember seeing that on TV when I was about ten years old.
It had a profound effect on me at that age. I struggled for years to come to terms with it.

In my later years, when I read the book, I was struck by how true they were to each other.

I find in general TV Series or Mini Series based off books tend to follow the story much better and give you all the detail you need and are looking for.

The recent Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is an excellent adaptation of the novel.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is another strong adaptation.

The recent True Grit is quite close to the original novel.

One of maybe 5 films I saw in the past year.

Have to second the LOTR trilogy, with the caveat being the way they separated the movies. Some of the Frodo/Sam travels in book two were covered in the third film, as well as other very minor things.

Also thought The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Daniel Craig edition) followed the book relatively close.

Chuck, the Hunt For Red October is also one of my favorite movies. I don't know if I fully agree with Chris on a different plot twist, I would say it has a different ending. I do agree that the movie's ending is done well, and works just as well as the book's.

You know, I read the Tinker Tailer book many years ago, and just couldn't get into it. I also didn't really like the movie. I don't know what it is--gotta be just me.

No, it is not just you, Chris.

During my screening of TTSS, The wife fled the room 10 minutes into the film accusing me of choosing the lousiest most boring movies she has ever seen while touting her ability to bring home the most wonderful treasurers ever to be put on celluloid. :E

So according to The wife, I posses taste only & to little extent solely within the confines of my mouth. :W
