    An old fashioned movie night

Everyone in the house is sick (I'm at the tail end--the kids (2 and 6) and mother are in the thick of it) so I had to be nearby, especially for the little one. This meant no retreating to the HT room with the full audio/visual extravaganza. Rather, I spent the night (after the hockey game, of course) in front of my living room TV (a decent Sony 27" Grand Wega SD CRT) watching an old chestnut: Hitchcock's Suspicion. Brought back memories of late night movies well before I'd even imagined a home theatre. And I have to say I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Sure, it wasn't a "cinematic" experience, but it was a movie experience--at least mostly. I've always liked the PQ of my Sonys (I have a 32" version in the HT--was my display until I got the projector last August; currently serves to help prop up the screen for the PJ), especially with SD DVD and Suspicion looked great. The trailer is there (unrestored) to compare and remind anyone of what late night classics USED to look like. So, apart from the dramatically improved PQ, it was a fun trip down memory lane and I may well repeat it every once in awhile--even if I don't have to (like tonight).

Anyone else ever go down "memory lane"?

Ah, yes, and that's a very fun aspect of the A/V hobby! (... sickness/disease/whatever you want to call it) I have the same sort of thing, periodically, like re-watching the Matrix, which was my first DVD. Or Top Gun, which was my first VHS tape as a kid. Or other movies that were treats for me to watch frowing up, either on late night television, or special occasions in movie theaters like you mention. Good times. Some movies take you back to the point in your life when you watched them, like on a date, or maybe you were going through something in your life at the time.

Good points, all. I often watch a film again, in part, to repeat the mood it prompted when I first saw it (not always possible, of course, but sometimes it works). I was interested, though, in the WAY that some might "go down memory lane". Specifically, setting aside the "latest and greatest technology" and watching a movie in a "lower tech" environment (for those who still have SD TVs for example). I thoroughly enjoy my HT (I wouldn't have put thousands of dollars into it, fuss over the setup, etc., if I didn't) but last night brought back to me the simple charm of a "movie on late night TV" (semi-late, really, as I started it at around 10pm instead of the more "classic" 11:30pm)--no fancy display, no amazing sound system, no settings to fuss with. While I certainly won't stop watching old 4:3 B&W classics with the HT (recreating a "classic cinematic experience" is also a lot of fun), I think I will be less reluctant to pull an old classic off the shelf and watch it like I did "in the old days" every once in a while.

I guess "frowing up" is what a lot of kids called what happened when they got sick. But it did make it hard to concentrate on plot. :>)

There is nothing like live music to ground the obsessive compulsive disorder for system critiquing & tweaking. The wife & I try our best to get out as often as possible to take advantage of the plethora of diverse and exquisite music and venues available in Pittsburgh.

            Hi all.

I want to create a list of the ESSENTIAL movies or series that we should have in the ultimate collection. By collection, I'm not limiting this to DVD's - any movie or series available whether it be just released, only on late-night TV, laserdisc, VHS, DVD, you name it - is up...

I don't know the name of this film right off. But let's start with the fact it is based on a true story.

So, spoiler alert if anybody wants to watch a movie like this, not knowing the name, it involved hiking, a young couple, and on/off course day and night time hiking and camping. Stop...
