    The Hunt for Red October

Although its an old movie, but got to see it now and all that I can say is, I was glued to it till the end. Its not like U571 wherein you get to the see a lot of action but its gripping.

Must to see. See IMDB details here

The first of Tom Clancy's "Jack Ryan" novels (and movies), it was translated from paper to screen with several glaring issues/omissions/errors. But, taken on its own was a pretty good flick. Just the cast alone made it worth a watch:

    Sean Connery
    Alec Baldwin
    James Jones
    Sam Neill
    Tim Curry
    Scott Glenn
    Sen. Fred Dalton Thompson
    Gates McFadden (her first role?)
    .

Yes, I really liked this one. I remember watching some movie, and in the previews before the feature, the opening shot was something like an ocean with a sub breaking surface off in the distance. I immediately said, "that's GOT to be Hunt for Red October", even though I hadn't heard anything about it being made into a movie. Sure enough, it was.

I grew up on Clancy, and Red October was the first major novel that I read, way back in like 4th or 5th grade, and then read it over again several times. I actually really liked the way the movie turned out. I liked that they diverged in the plot from the book in the final resolution, but still kept it a strong story. Kept it fun to watch even for us Clancy fans that knew the book inside and out.

Interestingly enough, this is always the movie I think of, also, when I talk about Sen. Fred Thompson. A few years ago, I carried him on my airplane on a trip also with Sen McCain. Now they both may be running for President. But I'll always have Sen Thompson in my mind in Red October, standing in his office with his hands stuffed in his pockets, grumbling something about the Russians like he does.

Yeah, agreed all around. Clancy's books are/were just so full of detail it'd take a miniseries to really do something them justice. I like the fact that the Russian captain has a thick, Scottish burr, too.
Really the only Clancy film I've liked.

A must see film for sure. Great acting across the board. Solid script. Very difficult not to like this movie.

definitely my favorite of the big screen trilogy. i scored all three from wal-mart last year for $4.99 a pop. DTS isn't half bad considering when the movie was shot :T

                riceaterslc,

Are your sure all 3 are DTS DVDs? I saw the add on walmart.com but no mention of DTS. I know is only Walmart but just checking B4 ordering.

Several of Clancy's films were re-released in DTS a few years back. IIRC, they included

                    Clear And Present Danger
                    Patriot Games
                    The Hunt For Red October
                    .

Red October was published in 1984 by Naval Institute Press (it was their first title) and I was lucky enough to read it a few months after its initial run. FWIW, as a kid, I think I actually enjoyed "Red Storm Rising" even more than Red October. I read that one several times. Only Clancy book sans Jack Ryan.

That might be my Clancy fave, Chris, re-read it not long ago. That's one to which even a 3-hour movie would only bear a passing similarity, way too much info and richness of plot.

Yeah, there was some talk of "Red Storm Rising" being made into a film, but I think it would be way too difficult. This was written in the mid-late 80's, where the Cold War exploded into global WW III. I remember a lot of it taking place in Iceland and Germany. Could be a story too big for the screen.

I agree. First Clancy book I read. A shame it's too "busy" for a movie.

Red Storm Rising could be done, but you'd have to break it into 4 separate movies all somehow tying together:

                                    The Chicago
                                    Germany
                                    The Pharris/Rueben James
                                    Iceland
                                    .
