    Are You Slowing Down?

On buying DVD's that is? :B

I know I am. With the upcoming release of high-def DVD (whether Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is immaterial for this point), I'm just not willing to sink too much into our beloved - but standard-def - DVDs any more. Oh, I still buy the title I really want, but I won't pick up those less desired or marginal titles. How 'bout you?

These days, it's usually just the new movies that the I really like which are being released to DVD for the first time or very special favorites that never made it to either DVD or LD before that earn my DVD dollars. It's not the prospect of blu-ray or whatever that has slowed me down. With over 700 DVD movie titles on the shelves with a large stack that I've bought but haven't gotten around to watching yet, I just don't NEED to buy as many these days as I did in the "early days" of DVD when I was "building my collection". Plus I still have about 400 LD titles that have not been duplicated on DVD, so I have plenty to choose from when I decide to sit down and watch a movie. :>)

I am really slowing down. I only buy new releases that I truly feel warrant more than one showing, or something to complete a set. But everytime an older title comes out from the 40's 50's 60's, etc., that I have on tape or LD I quickly snap it up so that I can hopefully replace all the lds and tapes that are taking up too much of my much needed dvd storage space.

I find I have slowed down on the new releases, but I have a really bad "Jones" for the cheap sub $10 DVD's, you know like the 80's titles, or rated ones...

Recent Examples of $7.50 DVDs I bought at VHQ are:

Exit Wounds, really a good looking DVD, and that Anthony Andersen is a funny guy for some reason or another

Red Plant, another great looking movie, and not a bad scifi flick

Addicted to Love, Meg Ryan, and Kelly Preston, need I say more?

WildCats, with Goldie Hahn, a funny flick as it holds a timecapsule memory for me (point in my life)

I find I'm always rummaging though these bins, buying 4 at a time 8O

Due to the impending HD format war, I'm not slowing down for a while.

Yeah Shane, there is that to consider. Maybe I should just keep collecting and not worry 'bout it. :B

Yeah, I am not looking forward to this new format war. Why the hell can't they sit down, slug it out and come up with 1 format I will never know.

Not really slowing down much myself. I expect standard DVD to be on my shelves for a long, long, very long time. At over 400 titles, I can't replace any but what I love most even when they do iron out a format winner.

But you know it could wind up one is more PC oriented, and one DVD player oriented and both stay. But right now, Blue ray and the other are fighting for studios to add to their camp, so it looks like neither will say "uncle" to soon...

Doug you have that upsampling Samsung player right. With processing power improving and players like the samsung will get better and better, plus a need to be backward compatible with the old DVD format. I think good ol' DVD will be around for a while.
