"King of Kings" has a memorable score and perhaps the most cameo appearances by recognizable "big name" stars of its day of any major motion picture in memory except maybe "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", which, of course, was a comedy, and the stars in it were mostly comedians, except for distinguished director, Jerry Lewis. :>) For "King of Kings", George Stevens reportedly shot multiple takes of key scenes and had a heavy (controlling) hand in the editing room. He ended up with awesome visuals, but to follow the story, it helps if you've read the book. :>) Will I buy the Criterion DVD? I'll have to dig out my laser disc copy and see how badly I feel the need for an updated version.

I'm glad they are still issuing TV series M*A*S*H season at a time. Of course, Season Seven is a "must buy" as were the first six. Seven seasons being released so far gives us hope that all the seasons will eventually make it to DVD, hopefully including the movie-length "special" that ended the series as part of the last season's set instead of making us purchase it separately. Of course that is probably still a few years off...

... meanwhile we'll just have to make-do with "Molly & Roni's Dance Party 2 Pack" and "Circle Jerks: Live at the Hob". (Just kidding -- never heard of either of those, but I'm not too sure I'd want to see the video on that latter title.) :>)

Some other worthwhile flicks on the list besides "Giant" and "Farewell To Arms" (haven't you already got all of "The Matirx" movies by now?): :>)

Bandits -- a Bruce Willis flick directed by Barry Levinson

Diner/Liberty Hieghts combo pack (Liberty Heights is a "coming of age in Baltimore in the 1950s" story written and directed by Barry Levinson, who also wrote and produced "Diner" which is another "coming of age in Baltimore in the 1950s" story)

Gunga Din (assuming it is George Steven's 1939 classic wit hCary Grant, Joan Fontaine and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.

Hound Of The Baskervilles, The (either the classic Basil Rathbone or the colorful Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing "horror" version would be fun to watch again)

"M" two disc deluxe set (if you don't already have the Criterion edition -- I cannot imagine how this set would be "better" (they couldn't make the movie more creepy), unless you are interested in the extras).

Star Is Born, A (1937) A classic; the "orignal" with Janet Gaynor and Frederick March. Thankfully, Barbara Striesand wasn't born yet. :>)

      And just for laughs:

Young Doctors In Love -- no, this isn't the movie version of M*A*S*H, it's a spoof along the lines of Airplane!

I'm sure there are other titles coming out this week that would be of interest to someone, but that I've overlooked. Isn't it great to have this kind of selection during the holiday season, when we have nothing else to spend our money on? :>)

Hey Burke, yes I've already put all 3 Matrix's (Matrices? ) on the shelf, but I was speaking in generalities. Others might be interested in the box set - not me.

Apologies for not dating the Hound and Gunga Din. The Hound is the 1978 version with Peter Cook as Sherlock and Dudley Moore as Holmes. It's obviously NOT a serious treatment. : However, Gunga Din IS the classic with Mssrs. Fairbanks and Grant.

        Bandits? :scratchhead:

Then it is probably hilarious. I saw them in a Broadway show in that same general time period (NOT a production of "Hound", but rather, a comedy sketch revue) which was very entertaining.

It couldn't possibly be any worse than "Armageddon" and I've managed to get at least half-way through that one... :>) plus, Levinson has a a somewhat more deft touch than Michael Bay.

Bandits came out a while back. Are you talking about Bandit Queen?

Nope, not "Bandit Queen". If you can't find anything on the list besides "Diner" and "Liberty Heights", go back and pick up "Bandits" to round out your Barry Levinson collection. (Actually, I could have sworn I read "Bandits" instead of "Bandit Queen" on your list -- guess I was fixated on Barry Levinson's movies this week.)

I'm definitley picking up the Uber-sets of LOTR and Matrix this holiday. I already own Matrix 1&2, but have been holding off on the LOTR series until this Uber-set.

                  GUNGA DIN for sure.

GIANT ? This is the 3rd release isn't it. I bought my copy in 2002, then there was a SE after that and now this one.

One I'm really looking forward to seeing is Hell's Angels, Howard Hughes' big, expensive (for the time) WW1 picture, starring Jean Harlow. Apparently it features some very nifty looking aerial combat scenes. Unfortunately, it'll be another few weeks before it's released in Canada.

Brad, I truly thought Hells Angels was about the motorcycle gang. But that Hughes movie would sure be worth owning. I love those old classics.

Yeah George, I'll bet most people see the title and think the same thing. That moniker, Hell's Angels, is so wonderfully descriptive in the context of those vintage warplanes and fighter pilots. Such a shame it's been misappropriated.
