Should be interesting. I recall the real story and said to myself at the time that it would make a good film.

I could recall during the days when me and a couple buddies of mine when surfing up North in Santa Barbara, there were locals who were there before us and as we were gattering the gear, just off the beach, there was a guy in a frantic mode just getting off the water and showed us his board had a big chunk off it bitten out by a Shortfin Mako, it kind of freaked me out for a second. Baywatch had to investigate and make sure no one was in water while they did their thing. They did let us back in after an hour or so, the reason was there were seals in the area so they probably mistook the board for a seal. But generally they never attack surfers or swimmers, not unless provoked.

Well Friday was our 49th wedding anniversary so I took wifey out to dinner and then to a movie, which just happened to be OPEN WATER.
WARNING ! Watching two people bobbing up and down in the ocean for 80 something minutes can be awfully boring. It is based on fact because I recall reading the story in the newspaper. How they got left behind is stupid and scary and will probably keep some tourists away from deep diving tours after watching this film.

Picture qaulity was wanting in the theater we went to. Mostly seemed out of focus. Sound was also muted. Probably just a poor setup by the projectionist.
Frankly, we just didn't enjoy this film, period.

You know, everytime I venture out to the movies, which isn't often, I come home appreciating my home theater setup so much more.

I'll probably catch it at home but I heard its was hyped as bad as Blair Witch was..

Documentary of incident this movie was based on...

Caught a documentary on this last night after the Football game. The documentary was more interesting than the movie. [Some believe they faked their death, though no motive was ever given as to why they would do such a thing. New evidence that showed up well after the incident included a slate that divers use to write messages on underwater. The slate that was found had a message from the couple stating that they were left behind, they were helplessly drifting and needed help right away. The whole thing was quite bizarre. Thing is, the incident in reality happened off Australia's Great Barrier Reef and we all know this is known SHARK territory. There's little doubt in my mind as to their fate.

No problem, but I was talking about the documentary, not the movie. I guess I was thinking that anyone who goes to see this movie is aware of the real story. The movie doesn't go into the details that I mentioned in the documentary, if it had it would have been a better movie IMHO.

My wife and I saw Open Water and I admit it was a bit slow. But, in the directors' defense, I think they deliberately shot it on digital handicam type equipment to give it more of a home video feel. They felt it draws you in a little better, i.e. it looks like this could be your neighbors vacation video. No one striving for good cinematography would have that level of jaggies in their film (I hope! :W ).

There's some nice interviews with the directors and actors at NPR's website:

Film critic David Edelstein reviews the new film Open Water. The low-budget film is based on the true story of two Australian scuba divers who were left stranded by their charter boat.

Beyond all that, what I do think the film does really well is show the emotional stages that the couple went through the longer they were in the water. I'm not a scuba diver, but I could sympathize with them pretty strongly. For me, the ending resonated pretty strongly.

Not a movie for everyone, but I thought it was effective.
