    Love Actually

Last night Gord and I took our wives to see Love Actually the British Christmas romance movie. When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought wow any movie that has Hugh grant, Allan Rickman, Emma Thompson, rowan Atkinson, Liam neelson and Colin firth should be really good. So was it? Well yes and no. The deep cast for the most part gave solid efforts all round. The only main actor I was disappointed in was rowan atkinson since his par was very minor and his comedic talents were wasted in what little screen time he did get... to me it seemed like he was involved just to add another star to the credits.

The movie is basically that Love Actually is all around us in various forms and to that end the movie walks us though several intertwined plots of characters either falling even if sometimes its not with an approp. person. Personally I was expecting more of a comedy then what we were treated too...due in part to my expectations of what a huge grant/rowan atkinson movie "should" be but its not. There are some rather humorous moments though out the movie but for the most part is a more typical american styled romance/drama movie that just happens to be set in the UK (london to be specific)

So while I didn't get what I was expecting we did enjoy the movie and were witness to some pretty decent acting and the odd nudity scene to keep gord interested

It was also interesting to see allan rickman since I couldn't help but think of professor snipe when ever he spoke

    It didn't hurt

Yes it an adult comedy/drama fer sure. I may have liked it a little more than Andrew did as I didn't have any expectations going in.
At first I figured, okay, chic flick...but...

This movie is about love and loss, new love and old love, falling in love and falling out of love. Yes, the stories hold true to the title but it's not as hit you over the head as you would think and certainly not gushy. I think there's enough in here for just about everyone to relate to in one form or another. Heck, they even show the love of friendship, which is often under-rated, and then qualifies it with "Now let's go get pissed and watch porn, eh?" Too funny The movie can be formulaic, even deliberate at times, but I didn't feel too manipulated. I was simply entertained for a solid 2 hours and for a holiday movie, that's all I was really looking for. Colin Firth and Liam Neeson (love the name Liam...great Scottish name) stood out more than Hugh Grant (I thought...but he's a close second) Maybe I connected to their stories more. The interactions between Neeson's character and his stepson were genuine and touching and some of the best in the stories. The only unnecessary story, I thought, was our British friend who needed to get to Wisconsin to prove that, in the eyes of Amercian girls, he's a real swinger.

I have no problem recommending this movie for the holidays...it's not really a family holiday movie per se....at least not for the very small, but it's smartly done and a welcome change from the action flics and heavy dramas out there.

    I'll give it
