Tex has pretty much nailed all the goodies. BTW, just picked up Battle Of The Bulge. It replaces a non-widescreen vhs tape. Hope to watch it tonight in all its widescreen glory.- Bottom

Battle Of The Bulge
I watched this last night. Terrific job on restoration. Looked like it did in the theater, and maybe even better. I had it on tape but hadn't played it for years because I just can't watch tape anymore, but seeing it again in widescreen was a real treat. And talk about W I D E S C R E E N, my 92" wide screen has masking for 2:35 ar and there were black bars above and below the image. It was 2:75:1. Now that's widescreen.

Glen, I'd forgotten The Enemy Below, Sink The Bismarck, Stalag 17 and Zulu. Of course, I like the John Wayne vs. Japan series too.

Interesting that the common definition of a war movie is one in which gunpowder is the state of the art in weapons technology. Must be a Hollowood stereotype. Even more intesting is that movies set in a time before the American Civil War are often called epics rather than war movies.
saurabh: I'm curious, is this your definition too or is it "any war" as you state?
Maybe the fact that war is a major plot device in so many movies that it is not feasible for me to classify 50% of all Hollywood pictures as "war movies." Is this a indication of how important it is to humanity that much of our entertainment is based on conflict?

Well well, war for me would be anything which has the core plot surrounding a fight (as in war), whether or not they use conventional weapons or the traditional ones (bows, arrows) is not my concern.
Yeah! I agree with you that most people enjoy it, overlooking the humanitarian part of it, but thats human nature I guess......Need is the mother of all Inventions.....I am needy- Bottom

I'm sure it's just a gap in my knowledge (or memory :B ), but I can't remember many "war" movies that are set in times before the advent of gunpowder. The 300 Spartans comes to mind, but most are movies that focus on events happening on the edges of some war.
Some examples of pre-gunpowder movies would be nice - I'm still drawing a blank. :yesnod:.

Troy
Cleopatra
Funny how boys have always seemed to get into fights over girls.

Oh! Braveheart! Good one Chris. :T
Jensen, Cleopatra (at least to me) is one of those romances that takes place on the edge of a war - ie, the war isn't the focus of the movie..

The Big Red One was mentioned earlier. If you liked this Samuel Fuller film you should get the new dvd release that has added about 40 minutes missing from the previous laserdisc I had. I haven't played it as yet but am looking forward to it. It's one of Lee Marvin's best performances IMHO.- Bottom
