Is 985mk2 an upgrade for the rsx1055?

Mostly people want to upgrade the 1055 or 1065 with a 1075 or 1095, for that extra bit of power. But how good is the 985mk2 as an upgrade?
Its a lot cheaper second hand, but because its also a lot older, i dont know about the quality.
So my question is it better to use the internal amps of the rsx1055 or is it worth to "upgrade" to 985mk2 (or maybe 985mk1??)

    Hi Erik,

    I had in the past a RSX-965, and upgraded it by using different power amps: 985 mkII, 1075, 1095. I ended with a rsp1066, a rb1080 and a rmb1095.
With my ears, I could hardly notice a sound difference between the 985 mkII and the 1075, the latest one beeing a bit harsher with the highs.
As the 985 mkII was a GREAT improvement to the rsx-965 integrated power amp, I wouldn't hesitate, go for the 985 mkII and save some money.

On the other hand, the difference between the 985/1075 and the 1095 is also a big one :-).

    Regards,
    Pit.

      Hi,

I also own a rb985Mk-II, and from experience it is stunning. I think it is better than the 1075. Not only is it more expensive, but also a bit harsh.

I own a Denon 3801, however it is now only used as a processor. The fronts are driven bij a RB-981. All other cannels by the 985.

I also wanted a 1055. I would use my 981 for fronts, and let the 1055 power all other channels. Until I found a hardly used 985MkII. Only 9 months old and 599 Euro's. I am very happy with it.

So if you find one, get it. it will improve any receiver, possibly even the 1065.

      Good luck...

      The difference is very audible.

        Erik,

I have a RSX-1055 being used as a preamp with a 985mkII powering the surrounds and center channel. I use a RB-1070 for my mains.

When I first got the 1055 I used its internal amps and was very happy with the results. I stumbled on to a used 985mkII for a great price and decided to try it out.

After trying to compare the 1055's amps and the 985mkII's amps, tough when you have to stop and switch 5 sets of speaker cable, I came to this conclusion. If you really like to watch movies or listen to music really loud the 985mkII definatly is an improvment. I found that a dedicated 2 channel amp, my 1070, sounded much better than the 985mkII when listening to music. THe 1070 seemed to have more weight at lower volumes than the 985mkII.

So my answer to your question is.....

If you can get the 985mkII for a good price under $450 try it out and decide for yourself. THe 985mkII seems to have a pretty good resale value, I've seen it sell on Ebay for over $500. So if you dont notice a difference you can sell it and recoup your $$$.
