    Speaker Cable Recommendations and Termination

I'm considering the Kimber Kable 8TC speaker cables to mate with my A51 and Paradigm Studios. What other cables should I consider that synergize well with the A51 and what terminations should I consider? Thanks!

WBT terminators. If you have limited space on the back of your rack, you may want to go with the WBT-0645 stackable angled bananas. I use these for ALL my speaker connections (both amp and speaker ends) and I have been very happy with them.

Spades are IMHO better than bananas. However, the outputs on the A51 are so tightly crammed, that I strongly recommend going with bananas. Using spades with the A51 will probably be a hassle. If your speakers take spades, you might want to use spades on the speaker end and bananas on the amp end.

Don't forget to have a look at http://www.catcables.com too. I think their speaker cables should be adequate for your application and I'm sure Lex can offer them with any combination of WBT terminators of your choice...

Thanks again Peter. I was thinking about bananas on the amp end. I'll need to measure the size of the posts on the Paradigm Studios. Are you using the Cat Cables on your rig?

Do some exploring on other forums.

Due to the ownership and rules here, see

you will not get candid responses and links you would elsewhere.

        One option is always DIY.

Buy some Canare 4S11, some expanding Bananas, some Techflex, and heatshrink.

        I recently did this.

My total cost was ~$40 (including shipping) for a 6 foot pair. Other tools needed are wire cutters/strippers, solder, a soldering iron, and a heat gun.

Having said that, I am quite into DIY. If I were to consider buying speaker cable, I would highly consider CAT.

No, like Karl, I make them myself. However, if I need to buy a cable I will get it from Cat Cables.

As the guys said, cables are a touchy subject around here.

I'll just say that yes, I do use nothing but Cat Cables in my various A/V setups. My Parasound Zcustom setup is currently running Cattail speaker cables with WBT spades... wow!

You can find pictures of my Parasound equipment with Cat Cables in various places here in the Club, especially the "Parasound Pictures" thread.

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware of the restrictions. I've made a number of cables myself. I may look at that option again. I like the technology behind the WBT connectors so I'll pursue that as well.

When it comes to WBT, you'll need to invest ~$70 in the crimp tool. However, if you need a complete set of 7 cables, it will probably pay for itself...

At this point, I was only going to replace the cables for the front three speakers. I may upgrade the back two at a later date. Checking the price for the WBT Crimping Tool ~ $90. Wow!!!

:agree: That TechFlex really makes a night and day difference when it comes to looking professional. I need to visually enhance my cables like that too :B

                        Nbourbaki,

What Paradigm studios are you running?

I have Reference 100's for the L/R mains, CC-570 center and 4 ADP-470's for the rear.
I am also have a Servo 15 for the sub.

                        All speakers are ver.3

Thanks Peter and others. I'd be glad to quote on any configuration needed. It is true there's always DIY, some results can be a little better than others with that approach, some people just don't want to figure it all out. Now if you were going to do it a dozen times, that would be one thing, but for one set of speaker cables, by the time you get it all nailed down, it may just be easier to order them from us. I do have some supply of WBT on hand, particularly well stocked on the stackable bananas. Some spades, some straight bananas, stock is somewhat limited, but I can always order on demand.

I also have some very current product images to be going up on my new development site very soon. CATCables.com is getting a makeover. So, maybe tonight I can get the base page loaded. Later, larger images will be available though by either cursoring over product pics, or by clicking them. Initially, the images will be somewhat limited in size.

www.katkables.com is the temporary site, again, the speaker cables are not there yet, but will be this week, maybe by tomorrow.

                          thanks.

Mine are all version 2. Studio 60 up front, CC center, 20s in the back and a PW2200 sub. They really sing with my new A51.

Karl - after looking at a lot of alternatives (including the Kat Kables) - I've decided on the DIY and the Canare 4S11 for my three front speakers. I should have all the parts next week. Thanks for the suggestion Karl!

As far as i know Rotel accepts 5/16" spades. I am thinking of getting Cardas Golden Reference Speaker Cables with cardas spades which can be either 1/4" or 9mm (designed for the typical oversized european binding post). Will the 1077 work with cardas spades or will i have to get bananas;...

Is there enough space between each output to fit spade connectors? Do spades provide a better contact surface than banana plugs?

                                  Hi all,

Can anyone confrim that the A51 power amp can accept spade connectors ?

If it can, does the close proximity of the binding posts cause problems ? Anyone using spades with the Halo line ?

                                  Thanks

I recently purchased the A51, and I am getting a hum from the transformer. The hum comes directly from the A51 unit and not through the speaker (it's not a ground loop problem).
