What volume do you listen at? (Krell & B&W)

Ok, I know this is a rather wierd question but I'm curious as to what volume you listen to your beamers at (specially if you have a Krell)

I usually listen to them at 45-55 volume level on my Krell 400Xi

Another question - is it harmful to the speaker if you start playing at a high volume if the speaker hasn't "warmed" up yet?

    HI junky,
Good question but hard to answer with any precision. The volume control setting is a useful reference only for yours or an identical system.

An SPL meter can be used to measure volume but that must be referenced to a specific program. If you do these things then we can expect a reasonable answer.

In more general terms, I listen moderately loud but not to an extreme. I would say the loudest passeges go as high as 105dB SPL. Maybe sometimes a little louder. It depends on the program. I know some people that listen much louder but it makes me uncomfortable.

      Hi,
I have my speakers (N802) calibrated at 75db in my Proceed AVP2 and the volume setting starts at 0. Amp is Fpb300cx. Around 40 is my average point, loud enough to hear everything but you can still speak around the table. At 72 the display says " Ref " and then it is ******loud. I suppose thats equal to feeding tha amp directly from the cdp without a volume control.
Anyway since I bought the Krell I am amazed how good it sounds at low volumes, even from ~20 its all there, all dynamics and imaging. And when you go louder nothing changes but the level, I know it shouldn't either but I've had other gear that had like three different sound characters depending on volume setting.

Wow even at 20!!! Are you using balanced inputs?

I tried listening at volume 60 today ont he Krell and I swear I could hear some distortion - could have been a CD player since I don't have one :B I'm using a $100 Toshiba DVD player as my CD player currently (till I get the Rotel RCD 1072)

I'm a little concerned since initially the speakers have a little trouble with high volume but after playing about 1 song, I can really crank it up.

has anyone noticed this quality - or is it the (cheap) CD player??!!

I'm not a Krell guy but I thought I'd toss my own experiences here anyhow - pardon my intrusion Krell people!

          Proceed AVP
          Mark Levinson 432
          N802

For CDs I generally listen around 38 though I sometimes go up to 43. I could go higher but then it's too loud for my tastes and it would probably bother the neighbours (I live in an apartment).

For radio though I can go to 50 without difficulties and it sounds great! I use a Magnum Dynalab FT-101A tuner which sounds wonderful.

B&W CM7 and low volume performance
            by Mathieu
            Hi,
I listened to the cm7 at my local shop and really loved them.
However I'd like to have a system that works well at lower volumes as I don't listen too loud. I didn't really managed to make sure of that with the cm7 in the shop. I guess it also depends to some extent to the amp they...

            Volume with Rotel 1095/Onkyo 705
            by MikeHe
Hi, I have a rotel 1095 along with an onkyo 705 along with a pair of ML Vantage as fronts, b&w matrix 805 as center and a pair of 804's as surround. Connection from pre amp to power are with monster interlink 400 cables. However for the rotel making 200 watts * 5, the volume isn't that loud. When...

What design parameter(s) enhance low volume listening?
            by MikePM
Although I don't post often or at all, I have been reading this forum for some time and completed my first 6.5" 2-way DIY design about 6 months ago. They sound great at average or higher volumes, but are a little compressed when listened to at low levels. Unfortunately, I rarely have the chance...

Amplifier Power and Speaker Volume Calculator
            by Aussie Geoff
            Hi,

Here's a LINK to a useful calculator to see how loud a given amplfier power will drive speakers in your room. For Home Theater use 2 or 3 speakers since the rears never really contibute to the maximum volume..

Try different powers (10W, 100W, 200W etc) remembering

            Phone volume issues?
            by madmac
Hey, has anyone noticed volume issues with their phones recently? I listen to a fair amount of music on my Samsung Note phone and it seems that most times I'm listening at maximum volume and it is ok......but not super loud.

With my older phones and various other music players I've had...
