A newbie here. Quick question. When it comes to long runs with either componet or an HDMI cable (lets say 50-75ft) does ones signal strength deteriorate quicker than the other? Thanks in advance!

Oooh, good question. Hmmmm... I don't know the answer. But in my mind, since HDMI is digital, it's all or nothing. You won't get some light fuzz or static, you'll just lose the signal, or have big red lines through it, etc. You can boost the HDMI run, though, and then you're right back to perfect clarity without introducing video noise.

Well, we're safe for now. Thank goodness we're in a bowling alley.

More or less what I would say too. It will also depend on the signal you are putting through the cable. You will get something out the other end regardless with component even if you are putting 1080 through it, just may have some degradation.
A 75' HDMI might work OK with 720p or even 1080i, but with 1080p it starts to get iffy. You are then dependent on cable quality (there are some that will manage it) but also quality (strength) of the HDMI transmitting chipset in your source. Some units, like the Anthem pre/pros act as repeaters and boost the signal and so are more likely to work in this scenario.
I ran into this with SPDIF, where I was placing a DVD player near a projecotr for a short DVI run, and running SPDIF back to the prepro. When I switched to an oppo, it would no longer work as its SPDIF output was too weak and the prepro constantly lost lock.

Pretty much as everyone has already stated, any HDMI run over 25', will require a high quality cable to minimize/eliminate signal degredation. You may also require a HDMI signal booster, like the ones by Gefen, for excessive runs of up to 200'.
Peace and blessings,

by KRCAs with alot of interconnects and speaker cables say they are directional (ie follow the arrows), would an HDMI cable also be directional.
By adding one of those couplers to an HDMI cable (DVI to HDMI/HDMI), does it take away from the quality of the sound. I was told in the past that...-
