    Hi Gordon,
I've had Rush on my "bands I've heard about but never listened to but should" list for years. Can you recommend a good CD/sacd/dvd-a or dvd as an intruduction to Rush?

Can't agree with you on that aud19, the boys from Kingston are not on my list of great canadian bands, but they do have some good tunes. However I do agree with you on G.Lee's voice as well as whats her name from Quebec.

      Wide Mouth Mason
      Bachman Turner Overdrive
      The Guess Who
      Street Heart
      Loverboy
      Lenard Cohen
      Triumph
      Nickleback
      The Powder Blues Band
      Matt Minglewood
      Downchild Blues Band
      Big Dave McLean
      Neil Young
      Joe Satriani
      Colin james

      The Rest of the World
      ACDC
      Elvis
      The Beatles
      Wings
      John Lennon
      Led Zep
      The Birds
      Cream
      John Lee Hooker
      Howlin Wolf
      Stevie Ray Vaughn
      The Fabulous Thunderbirds
      Iron Maiden
      Nirvana
      Jon Bon Jovie
      Billy Joel
      U2

Good point, Gord. Some good artists have put out some real crap in later albums, which really lowered my opinion of the band. The old "quit while you're on top" thing.

For a "sampler" go with Chronicles. This is a collection of their works that came out in 1990-1991, and what a collection it is! It's out in CD, but I'm not sure about SACD or DVD-A. It's a winner. :T Well if you're a fan anyway.

            David beat me to it....
Chronicles should give you a nice progression of what their sound was and where it's been going...

70's rush was the progressive rock (read... songs are long, occasionally out there but have interesting themes) 2112, Fly By Night, Farewell to Kings etc...

            In the 80's
            Moving Pictures
            Exit....Stage left is a gooder.
Power Windows had some big commercial hits in the mid 80's
followed quickly by Hold your Fire

A Show Of Hands is a good live compilation album (pieced together concert material) that does similar things as Chronicles but offers that "Live" dynamic.

In the 90's... Presto and Roll the Bones work well.
            That's a start...
Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here.

Lots of my favorite bands listed here!

A few that haven't (or that I missed).

              - Sting (Solo, Police, etc...)
              - Red Hot Chili Peppers
              - Phil Collins (Solo, Genesis, etc...)

I think the biggest problem with choosing the "best anything" ever is that beyond it's own inherent qualities, something like music will always be associated with an individual's experience.

For instance hearing a Guess Who/Rolling Stones/Aerosmith etc song when you had your first kiss will always influence your perception of that song/band and remind your brain of a very good time in your life.

For me bands like Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chilli Pepper's, Nirvana, Tragically Hip etc will forever be engrained in my head with fun memories from highschool of partying and hanging out with friends crush's on girls, kissing girls (pretty damn cute one's I might add :T ) etc. Now of course that music will have a more visceral affect on me than say the Guess Who/Rush/Iron Maiden or whoever that I don't have a strong memory to tie to. Where as Frustrated might have strong memories he associates with those bands.

Your right Aud I do have strong memories associated with those bands. However, I know good music when I hear it , and in this case like I said in my previous posts we have a difference of opinion. For the record, I don't like U2, Sting or Genises that doesn't mean I think they all suck. Some music does make me want to throw up, such as Celine and Depeche Mode.

Another thing Aud, even though I'm not Irish; I grew up in an Irish pub. And they played.......you guessed it.....U2. Kind of irritating after a while. :banghead:

For sure, good music is good music in most cases. However some people can't stand classical music and I love going to the symphony....? I can assure you I spent very little time listening to Mozart when I was kissing cute teenage girls unless Bugs Bunny was on a TV in the background  but it's still evokes a strong emotional response from me when I listen to it now.

I'm just commenting that our memories can have a pretty big influence on how we perceive otherwise generally accepted "good music". So while you may have heard the Hip on the radio driving home from work and thought hey that's pretty good music, I may have been listening to the same album while partying with some good buddy's and ended up making out with some little teenage hottie and think that was f'ing great music! (Not that that's based on a true story...just an example )

So while yes I agree good music in most cases is good music to most people, memories can have a large influence on what individuals might consider great or "the best" making it pretty much impossible to pinpoint even five bands, let alone one (though I'm still sticking with the Beatles here :B )

Hallelujah :amen:we have an agreement. For Aud and everybody else. Music affects us in different ways. We all have our likes and dilikes for whatever reason. That doesn't mean my choices are better than yours; they're just different. We should all respect that.

Actually, Jason, I was going to write to you, you need to buy tickets, they're coming to Vancouver on April 28th. If you're a U2.com fan club member, you can buy tickets during the pre-sale that started THIS MORNING. Otherwise, it doesn't open to to general public until Feb 5th. I wouldn't wait, though... tickets went fast, and Philly sold out before it even got to the general public.

Unfortunately, I was limited to 2 tickets in the pre-sale, so it's me and the wife. But go to U2.com for more info!

I could afford to go but they are nowhere near me. Chicago is about it.

Having seen them twice, I'll just wait for the eventual DVD or wait for it to hit HDTV like INHD or something along those lines.

They are a fabulous show though.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. I believe that the live shows are widely considered the finest. I also feel that the longevity and continued musical relevance of the band is quite amazing.

Rolling Stones, then the Beatles, then maybe somebody else like U2. But then how are you defining best? Best music? Most success? Longest running success? There are just so many different ways to measure success.
