Efficient full range speakers for tube amp

    Hi gang,

I'm looking for imput on a full range speaker that will work well
with a 40watt Tube amp. I came across Silverline Audio, their
Sonatina III model, for example. Thoughts??

    Thanks.

PSB Audio's Platinum T8s are rated at 90 dB. Fine speakers, with an elegant, un-cluttered sound.

Has anyone tried any of the Dyanaudio line with a tube amp?
I'm leaning toward purchasing a tube amp to complete my set.
I don't really want to limit my speaker choices, but I don't know.

For the Dynaudio line, I think it would have to do with with model(s). I believe you'd be o.k. with the Audience line, I am not too certain on their new line, FOCUS, but I think from the Contours and beyond you'd be in trouble.

IIRC, the Dynaudios best sensitivity is only 88-89 dB, so 40 watts of "tube power" might do it, but I'd definitely audition them with your amp before buying - unless the dealer has a good return policy.

Thanks David. The amp I have my eye on has only 36W. I'm new to tubes currently I have a Tube pre-amp, my new tube CD player is on a Fedex truck
on it's way to me :B. I'm still willing to consider not goint tubes all the way.

                  Hi

Personally I would look at Supravox drivers or even some Fostex. They are from 96dbs to 99db efficiency.

Also, Lowther DX4 full range drivers are 103db efficient but a little pricey...

My wideband drivers from EV were measured at 103db efficiency. I have 2 monoblock SETs of 32 watts each. I am pleased with the dynamic capabilites and accuracy of my system on these amps and this is coming off of 300 watts of SS amps.

                  just my 2 cents
Got a nice rack to show me ?

Can you point me to speakers that use these drivers?

I thought I could come up with something for you, but so far no luck.

One question you might ask of Bambam is just how deep his speakers go. Lowthers are renown for their sound, but IIRC they may require a sub for the low notes.

Depends on how "audiophile" you want to go.

I think there are more than a few decent setups using some of the Heritage line of Klipsch speakers (Klipschorns, Belle Klipsch, La Scala) matched with tube gear. These are all on the order of 103-104dB/W/m sensitivity so in that respect fit well with low to moderately powered tube gear provided you have the space and, of course, like the sound.
There are some things which are impossible to know, but it is impossible to know which things these are. :scratchhead:

out of curiosity does anyone know how a set of la scala's with tube amps across the front three channels would be for a 5.1 channel SACD/Home Theater setup. what surrounds would go well with these speakers.

while i am asking these hypothetical questions what pre/pro would be a good match for a tube amp home theater.

                                whoaru,

Those are big speakers! they will never make it into the living room,
the wife will see to that. I don't have a dedicated listening room
so first I have to win the "where are you going to put that?" battle
before I can consider a speaker. Just last night we were discussing
speakers. She hates the New JM labs, as well as the Von Schweikert.

                                  Greglett,

The Agathons use Lowther drivers, but again $$$. There are many concepts. The drivers I mentioned are often used in DIY concepts.

My EV`s are capable of going down to 50hz and pretty linear at that. However I am in an open baffle concept so I have a rolloff at 160HZ at 6db/octave but it flattens out at 100hz. I use 2 subs with peerless drivers for my first octave.

Thanks Bam. There's no way I'm going to get any large speakers in my living room. I would have to wait untill we move, hopefully next summer. for the moment I'll concentrate on getting an amp. The speakers I like are in the
4K range anyway, so one thing at a time.

If I get my listening room befor I get the $$$ for the speaker that'll be great
this way I don't have to worry about WAF. factor.

Get this.. She likes the MBL 300E.. sure honey I'll pick that right up :B
