    SSP 600 - no rears...

    Hi there,

Not really a Classe owner, but I have an SSP 600 which I'm currently evaluating... And so far, the results are quite good.

However, I'm running into a small problem, which I can't for the life of me figure out; the rear speakers don't fire in playback.

I have the rears set to small (THX), ASA apart. When I do the auto calibration, and check the levels afterwards, they are perfect...

... yet, no sound during playback. It almost feels like the processor is not sensing the 2 rear speakers.

Any ideas? Perhaps there's a basic setting that I'm missing? Or some post processing that needs to be applied that I'm not setting? Or maybe the processor has gone wonky and needs to be factory reset.

    Any ideas?

I'm assuming you are using 2-ch sources like CD. If so, what listening mode are you using? Stereo? Pro Logic II, other?

    Or are you using DVDs?

Ooops... Sorry for the lack of detail.

I'm using a mac mini with plex on it (basically, a media server that puts out digital audio streams). So the sound output is usually a dts stream.

The listening modes I'm using usually are PLII, but I've tried NEO 6, PLII+THX, etc., etc. All of them...

I just can't seem to get anything out of the rears. Any ideas?

If you are using 5.1 sources and speakers, are you sure you have connected the "rear speakers" to the (side) surround outputs on the SSP? The rear outputs are only for 7.1 output.

That sure makes a lot of sense

Man I am just missing out on all the info, aren't i?!? Sorry guys... Yes, I have SEVEN speakers connected, not five.

Also, when I go through the auto calibration, even then it just cycles through as if I have 5.1 connected (i.e., cycles the pink noise through the L,C,R,Sr,SL,LFE). The rears work just fine when I press the Noise Seq button... and somehow the levels are perfect.

But switch on a movie, NOTHING in the rears. Just did a factory reset, and still the same. I wonder if there's a toggle switch of some sort to switch this proc into 7 speaker mode?

Most movies are just 5.1 unless you post-process.

Question: When yous elect bitstream from the blu ray player to have DTS Master Audio 5.1 and apply Dolby Prologic IIx to have the 7.1. Does this then bring you back to compressed sound track?

Thanks guys... The confusion was that the relevant modes don't show up until the bitstream is playing.

So when I paused the movie to Go looking for dts neo6 or thx ultra 2 cinema, they weren't there.

Beautiful result btw. Very convincing presentation.

                  Thanks for the help.

                    Dunno. Never use 7.1.

So Dolby IIx downgrades the audio?

It will not degrade the audio. Dolby PLIIx will use the surrounds of a 5.1 signal to mix the rears for a 7.1 system.

I do not have rear speakers. Besides, there are no relevant 7.1 music sources and music is my real interest, not movies.

I think I saw a survey on some bluray site. I think they could find a total of 5 7.1 bluray movies, all in all. So its not a big deal, just having 5.1.
