Hi got a question about the older xxx01 series amps. I need four channels for a biamp configuration and have access to either 2 CA 201's or a CAV 500 for a similar price, Does anyone know if the CAV's are as good sounding as the stereo amps?

Yes, but note that the CAV-500 is similar to CA-301 and CA-401 both of which have trickle-down technology from the Omega series, whereas the CA-201 is a CA-200 with "01" cosmetics. The CAV-500 may likely be a bit more transparent and detailed than the CA-201.

Yes you can biamp with a CAV-500, although performance may not be as good as using separate 2-channel or monoblock amps. In the CAV-500's favor though, having one channel idle should help performance-wise by making more of the power supply capacity available to the other four channels being used.

I did biamp with the 500 for some time and found the sound quite satisfactory, one added beneft of using one amp is lessening the possibility of any ground loops which can occur with dual amps. Very good isolation, running the woofers didn't affect the sound of the top channels. After changing to speakers with different woofers ( a couple of inefficient TC sounds) just did not have enough oompf and went to a CA301 on top and a QSC 3602 below, more cables and connections, different sensitivities, more complicated for sure but the top end was quite similar. If the CAV500 has enough power for your woofers you can't go wrong.- Bottom
