    New Project Semi Translam

This is a new project I started since my last completef project in 2007, my first translam project with Seas drivers.
I'll post details about the drivers later. Mainly I'm displaying the cabinet building process.

        New Project Semi Translam

The side panels are left over hard wood flooring which actually match the translam theme. It is hard wood bonded to plywood. They had to be planed gown as they were contoured. It was finished with sanding sealer 2 coats, sanded down, then smoothed down with a scraper. Then rub on polyurethane was applied.

Very nice gmed, I like the contrast with the flooring you used for the sides.

Very well thought out and meticulously constructed. Looks to remain stable for a long time, I need to try one of these builds. Great job. :T

What did you finish the cabs with? Did you epoxy lam layers or wood glue?

                  Very nicely done.8)
                  1. template used to go from Round Woofer thru hole
to the flat sided rebate recess?

                  2. could you have used your Ply on the top the same
way as you did the face...to better align the ply pattern?
I see that you cut many vertical sections. Perhaps cutting
those longer & then making a second longitudinal cut, similar
to tapping & book matching veneer. I am just thinking out loud
and mentally planing a similar construction. I know when I
was aligning Zebrano veneer it was a pain in the ass., and as you
can see the Tineo veneer I used has differing grain patterns & staining.
which is inevitable when projects are spaced apart.

And I once again think you did a great job on this & you previous design.

looking forward to your followup thoughts about drivers & sound.

I used the router to cut the template. You can see the process in this thread that I just found, much easier than if I try to explain without images. I have couple of images attached but not complete.

as far as the top laters, I wasn't very particular. I realized afterwards. Im sure if I flipped it around, I would find the matching lines. I had bunch of precut pieces which I tried to use up. I didn't want to waste. this is why I just went with what I had. I wasn't planning it to be prefect. Otherwise I would have done a true translam like my previous mode. I particularly do not like veneers. thats just me. there is no point in doing translam if Im going to use a veneer. I like the pattern of BBply. the face usually has nice grains that I can leave natural. Except it doesn't take stain well and has to be conditioned a lot. I was planning to use black dye or stain, but since I used left over hard wood flooring which has ply, I went with the natural color.

This was something that I had to get out of my system, before I say goodbye to speaker building for a long time. Dont know where Im going to use them!!! I have another project incomplete, which I plan to paint Ferrari red.

If you are using an 1/8" bit, you have to use a 3/8" bushing.
1/4, you have to use a 3/4 bushing. 3x the diameter of the bit. IMO, smaller the bit, the nicer the corners.

Nice looking design, those Peerless HDS drivers don't get enough good rep around here they are very solid performers for the price. I guess this is what happens when you've got the RS series to compare to!

You're right. I think they are worth so much more than what they cost these days. Very solid driver.

I have been busy with life and work, I haven't been here for a while. I finally completed these speakers about 6 months ago after a long break. here is the finished product.

Thank you, Carl. The stands are very similar to my audio racks that I build few years back for my listening room.

                                                    congrats with the new build
pity about the discontinuity in grain pattern between the baffle and top
