    The thrill is gone...

    B. B. King, defining bluesman for generations, dies at 89

    From the New York Times:
“Growing up on the plantation there in Mississippi, I would work Monday through Saturday noon,” he said. “I’d go to town on Saturday afternoons, sit on the street corner, and I’d sing and play.
“I’d have me a hat or box or something in front of me. People that would request a gospel song would always be very polite to me, and they’d say: ‘Son, you’re mighty good. Keep it up. You’re going to be great one day.’ But they never put anything in the hat.
“But people that would ask me to sing a blues song would always tip me and maybe give me a beer. They always would do something of that kind. Sometimes I’d make 50 or 60 dollars one Saturday afternoon. Now you know why I’m a blues singer.”
And from the BBC News obituary:
It was while playing in one of the clubs that a fight broke out over a woman, causing a fire. After rushing out of the wooden building, he realised that he had left his guitar behind.
He risked his life by going back in to rescue his instrument. He named it after the woman whose charms had been behind the trouble: Lucille.
    The thrill is gone. Damn.

    ~Jon

P.S. I have a Lucille in my collection, too...

      This is bad news...

Somehow he always seemed to be "modern" until the end.

Hope he brought a pair of dipoles with him... :B

He was an icon for that style of music- at least, my favorite in the genre of older players.

          Rest in peace.

"Riding With the King" BB King and Eric Clapton - bought it a few years ago. Great playing by the great traditional and contemporary blues men. Clapton decided to go the blues route when? ~1995?

Hank, I'd say much, much earlier than that- remember, one of Clapton's earliest "big" gigs was playing with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers- this was well before Cream. And then, in Cream, there's that live version of "Crossroads", which was originally titled "Crossroads Blues", when written by Robert Johnson in 1936. A classic Delta Blues piece, for certain.

In my book, Layla and Other Love Songs is a blues album... I can't stand most of it; there are only a few really good songs, but those few are something else! (I'm not a blues fan.)

That's 1971... Thorn Tree in the Garden would have fit on Unplugged.

It seems like this is going into a rather ugly aftermatch :-(
Identically worded affidavits from two of the late B.B. King's daughters claim he was poisoned by a manager and personal assistant.
